South Carolina Gamecocks
The big story for South Carolina is that coach Shane Beamer, who used to work under Lincoln Riley when he was at the University of Oklahoma, was able to grab quarterback Spencer Rattler in the transfer portal.
Rattler played two seasons at Oklahoma. Beamer was familiar with him and was able to bring him to Columbia after Rattler was displaced for the starting quarterback job by Caleb Williams, who left Oklahoma this offseason to follow Riley to USC.
Rattler’s debut against Georgia State was successful enough to get the win, but his performance was not especially strong.
He threw two interceptions against the Georgia State defense and will definitely need to clean up his game as he moves forward this season.
South Carolina needs Rattler to be his best if the Gamecocks are going to challenge in the SEC. This will be a big step up in competition fand the odds in the sportsbook reflect that.
Arkansas is battle-tested after a win over Cincinnati in Week 1. Rattler will have to play much better if South Carolina is to pull this off.
Arkansas Razorbacks
Head coach Sam Pittman continues to get the job done at Arkansas. The Razorbacks continue to pass early-season tests against good teams outside the SEC.
Arkansas beat Texas last season and opened 2022 with a win over Cincinnati, a team that made the College Football Playoff.
Arkansas’ defense was tough and resilient. It was able to get stops on multiple drives in which Cincinnati got inside the Arkansas 40-yard line.
Cincinnati moved the ball reasonably well but could not finish drives against the Razorbacks’ defense. Arkansas had a supremely balanced offense against Cincinnati, rushing for 224 yards and passing for 223 yards.
Quarterback K.J. Jefferson completed 18 of 26 passes without an interception. He took care of the ball and led the offense, which did just enough to prevail in a 31-24 decision.
