South Carolina Looking for Another Upset Win
The South Carolina Gamecocks are coming off their best game of the season, routing Tennessee 63-38 at home last Saturday. It was a complete turnaround from the previous week’s loss to Florida in which the Gamecocks managed 6 points.
“That was probably the best I’ve ever felt in a game. I felt unstoppable,” South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler said after the win over Tennessee. “This game and the next one could change the narrative of this program forever.”
To do that, Rattler will need to be as good as he was against the Volunteers, as he threw for 438 yards and six touchdowns in the victory. Rattler, in his first season with South Carolina after transferring from Oklahoma, has thrown for 2,420 yards and 14 touchdowns this season, though he also has nine interceptions.
Rattler connected 11 times with junior wide receiver Antwane Wells Jr. for 177 yards in the win over the Volunteers. Wells has 54 catches for 767 yards and four scores this season.
Senior wide receiver Josh Vann had two catches for 78 yards, but he made them count, as both went for scores. Junior tight end Jaheim Bell also had two touchdowns in the contest while also rushing 17 times for 82 yards.
Clemson Still Working on Getting into Playoff
There are quite a few things that would have to happen to make it work, but the Clemson Tigers still have hopes of getting into the College Football Playoff. To do that, the first thing they need to do is win out, starting with Saturday against South Carolina.
The Tigers’ defense has stepped up over the last two weeks, holding Louisville and Miami to a combined 26 points after Clemson’s lone loss of the season on Nov. 5 saw Notre Dame score 35 points. On the season, the Tigers are giving up 20.0 points per game, which is tied with Utah and LSU for 24th in the country.
Junior quarterback DJ Uiagalelei had his best outing in weeks against Miami, throwing for 233 yards and two touchdowns. He was also sacked three times, the third straight game he’s been sacked two or more times. Uiagalelei has passed for 2,412 yards and 21 touchdowns this season while also rushing for 494 yards and six scores.
Sophomore running back Will Shipley is hoping to go over the 1,000-yard plateau for the first time in his collegiate career on Saturday. Shipley had 61 yards and a touchdown against Miami to give him 960 yards and 13 scores on the season.
