Southern California vs Stanford Predictions, Game Preview, Live Stream, Odds & Picks

One of the games that likely brought an end to Clay Helton’s time as USC’s head coach was a 2021 loss to a Stanford team that would win two Pac-12 games a season ago.

It would be quite an understatement to say things are different from the last time USC and Stanford met. USC’s head coach (Lincoln Riley) and quarterback (Caleb Williams) were at Oklahoma last season. Williams is far from the only newcomer as the Trojans had the No. 1 rated class of transfers.

Only the most loyal of Stanford fans knew much about quarterback Tanner McKee before he threw for two touchdowns in the win over USC in 2021. He also had a touchdown run in the game.

According to the college football lines, Southern California (+150) has the best odds to win the Pac-12 title. Stanford (+8000) is tied for 10th.

The Trojans (+1800) come in fifth in the odds to win the national championship. The Trojans moved up four spots to No. 10 in the Associated Press poll. In the American Football Coaches Association poll, USC went from 15th to 12th.

Southern California Trojans

Riley got things off to an impressive start as USC ran for more than 200 yards and averaged 7.4 yards per carry in a season-opening win over Rice.

Williams led the way with 68 yards. According to the college football picks, he has the third-best odds at +550 to win the Heisman Trophy.

Jordan Addison, the 2021 Biletnikoff Award winner as the top receiver in college football, is among the other prominent incoming transfers. He had five catches for 54 yards and a pair of touchdowns in his first game for the Trojans. Williams finished with 249 passing yards and the two TDs to Addison.

Lineman Tyrone Taleni and linebacker Shane Lee each had two tackles for loss in the 66-14 win. Lee also finished with a team-high eight solo tackles.

Stanford Cardinal

E.J. Smith had almost as many receptions as rushing attempts in his first two seasons at Stanford. That all changed in a season-opening win over Colgate as Smith rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. He added five catches in the win.

McKee was 22 of 27 for 308 yards with two touchdown passes and an interception. Smith was one of four players with either four or five catches in the win.

The defense held Colgate to 59 passing yards, the fewest yards a Stanford defense has allowed through the air since holding Oregon to 33 on Oct. 14, 2017.

Kendall Williamson had an interception while Levani Damuni had a team-high 10 tackles. Defensive end David Bailey became the first Stanford true freshman to start a season opener since Owen Marecic in 2007. Bailey finished with two tackles.

Southern California vs Stanford Betting Lines

Southern California vs Stanford Prediction

Stanford had two sacks in the win against Colgate and the Cardinal will need to do a better job pressuring the quarterback because Williams can carve up any defense if he is given the time to survey the field.

Southern California has only covered against the college football betting odds in two of its last eight games. The nine-point line seems pretty reasonable for the Trojans to cover.

Something to consider for those who bet online, the total has gone under in four of the last five games between USC and Stanford.

Stanford has failed to cover in its last five home games and is 0-8 against the spread in the last eight contests. The last time the Cardinal opened a season 2-0 came in 2018 when Stanford won the first four games. The game that improved its record to 2-0 was a win against USC.
