One of the most storied rivalries in college football is renewed on Saturday when the Stanford Cardinal visit the California Golden Bears. These two schools are located just 41 miles from each other in the Bay Area, and the history of this rivalry goes back to 1892.

Both former Pac-12 schools made the move to the ACC this season, with mixed results for both. California does come into this game at 5-5, needing a win to become bowl eligible, while the three-win Cardinal are just playing for pride and the chance to spoil their rival’s bowl hopes.

The college football lines for this game have the Golden Bears as 14-point favorites at home. Taking Stanford for a straight-up win will get you +450 odds on the moneyline while California is -600. The over/under for the contest has been set at 54½ points.

2 Bets You Should Consider for Stanford vs California

1. Back Cardinal to Keep Things Close vs Rival

Stanford has struggled to get wins this season, but it has faced a difficult schedule as well. Three of the Cardinal’s losses have come to teams in the College Football Playoff rankings: Notre Dame, Clemson and SMU.

One team that was in the rankings last week that isn’t anymore is Louisville, because Stanford defeated the Cardinals 38-35 at home last weekend. That game showed the ability of quarterback Ashton Daniels, who has been up and down this season.

Daniels finished with 298 yards and three touchdowns passing, finding freshman Emmett Mosley V 13 times for 168 yards and all three scores.

For the season, Mosley has 35 receptions for 361 yards and four touchdowns, but the Cardinal may have found a combination they can work against California. Per Stanford vs California stats, the Golden Bears rank 10th in the ACC in pass defense, allowing 237.0 yards per game, so Daniels and Mosley will certainly look to connect a few times on Saturday.

California just gave up 323 passing yards to Syracuse’s Kyle McCord in last week’s 33-25 loss at home to the Orange. The Golden Bears will need to tighten things up to be able to contain the Stanford passing game.

All of this adds up to Stanford keeping this game close, which is a trend in this rivalry. Only one of the previous seven matchups between these schools was decided by 14 points or more. We see that becoming one of the last eight after Saturday. We’re taking the points and going with the Cardinal for one of our college football predictions.

2. Intense Play Keeps Score From Going Over

A rivalry game means so much more to any college football team. It’s not just the result of the game and the effect it has on your season, but it’s bragging rights, especially when the rival schools are so close to each other.

More pressure means more chances for mistakes, and we think that happens in this one, keeping the score lower than expected for those who bet online. California has to get a win in one of its next two games – this week vs Stanford or next week at nationally ranked SMU – to become bowl eligible, so the Golden Bears are really going to be feeling the pressure.

Sophomore quarterback Fernando Mendoza has been solid running the California offense this season, passing for 2,705 yards and 13 touchdowns with just six picks. But three of those interceptions have been thrown over the last two games, and he’s taken a lot of hits, getting sacked 17 times over the last five games.

Stanford has just 18 sacks on the season, good for 14th in the ACC, but it will certainly be trying to bring the pressure on Mendoza in this one.

It’s a cliche, but mistakes are going to be the story of this one, with the winner being the one making the fewest. But both will make some miscues, so expect a lower score than the total is predicting. Put one of your college football picks on the under to pick up a wagering win.
