The No. 14 Syracuse Orange look to continue a truly improbable (6-0) start to their season with a road showdown against their ACC Atlantic Division rival, the No. 5 Clemson Tigers. This is by far the Orange’s biggest test to date, and their first tough game on the road. Should it win, Syracuse may reach the Top 10 in the polls. Syracuse Orange

So, without buzzkilling Syracuse’s impressive start to the season, it is important to note the Orange have only played one game on the road. Against an overmatched UConn Huskies team, it was a 48-14 laugher. In last week’s 24-9 win against then-No.15 North Carolina St., remember the Wolfpack were down to their second-string quarterback.

Despite a soft schedule, Syracuse’s defense has been dominant. SU is ninth in the nation (15.8 points per game allowed), and 13th in opponent yards per game (312.6). Offensively, a respectable 43rd in scoring, 69th in yards per game.

Quarterback Garrett Shrader has a strong touchdown-to-interception ratio (12-to-3), 1,434 passing yards. Running back Sean Tucker has six touchdowns (124 carries, 644 yards).

Clemson Tigers

The Tigers are unbeaten at 7-0, largely because of quarterback DJ Uiangalelei. The junior ranks 37th in yards passing (1,665), 10th in touchdowns (17), with just two interceptions. Uiagalelei is one of the more productive quarterbacks in the nation.

However, Clemson’s biggest advantage is its stifling defense against the run. Ranking second in the league (2.7 yards allowed per rush) as well as total rush yards per game (79.5). Syracuse has been running the ball nearly 56% of the time. That may need to change against Clemson.

We still aren’t completely sold on Syracuse as a Top 25 team, as its only real test came against a North Carolina St. team without its starter at quarterback. This will be only the Orange’s second game on the road. Therefore, to pick them to win is a longshot. Syracuse is 4-1 against the spread in the last five games against Clemson, however, 5-1 ATS in 2022. We are willing to wager on the Orange to keep it close albeit in a losing effort.
