Syracuse (6-4, 3-3 in ACC) and Wake Forest (6-4, 2-4) are looking to apply a tourniquet to losing streaks. While each has bowl-berth qualifications, this isn’t the way to play down the stretch of the season.
The Orange had their losing skid extended to four games, that after being dominated at home by Florida St, 38-3. It was the third straight Demon Deacon loss, eventually falling to North Carolina, 36-34.
It was a 6-0 start by Syracuse, but the Orange have lost repeatedly. The losing streak has coincided with more challenging opponents, such as Clemson, Notre Dame and Florida St. The easiest game through this stretch was supposed to be against Pitt, but quarterback Garrett Shrader missed it with an undisclosed injury.
Shrader’s injury occurred in the first half of the game with Notre Dame, and the offense has suffered since. The Orange scored nine points against Pitt, then just three in Shrader’s return last week. He has just 65 yards through the air, so perhaps he was not ready to return.
Opposing defenses thus do not respect the passing game, selling out to eliminate the run. There were only 160 total yards against the “Noles last week, 95 on the ground (31 attempts).
The struggling defense did surrender 41 points to Notre Dame, first time they allowed more than 30 in a game. Florida St. then shredded the Orange with 420 total yards.
Wake Forest’s offense has been one of the best in the ACC, heavily leaning on quarterback Sam Hartman and the passing game. In the two games the offense hasn;t reached 30 points, Hartman struggled, tossing six of his 10 interceptions.
Against the Tar Heels, 320 yards and four touchdowns. It was his fourth game with four or more touchdown passes, and sixth 300-yard day. The Demon Deacons have the second-best passing offense in the conference-only behind Carolina-309.7 yards (3.3 touchdowns) per game.
However, in the fourth quarter of a close game, the offense went dark, and scoreless. The same offense that scored 34 points in the first 45 minutes. In the last quarter, the Deacons had an 11-play turnover on downs, a Hartman interception and just four before another turnover/downs.
