Take Points With Tulane vs No. 17 Kansas State 9/7

  • Kansas State’s defense dominated last week, holding its opponent to less than 140 total yards.
  • Tulane also put on an impressive defensive show, shutting out its opponent in Week 1.
  • With both of these teams’ defenses dominating last week, the under seems like the best College Football betting option.

In the opening week of the college football season, No.17 Kansas State and Tulane dominated FCS teams. That makes college football predictions a little more complicated for Week 2 when these two teams are matched up. Neither team was tested last week, and they definitely will be in this matchup.

Last week, Kansas State dominated Tennessee-Martin in a game that was never a contest. The Wildcats won 41-6 but didn’t cover a 37-point spread. Part of the reason is that the Wildcats’ offense took some time to get rolling, only scoring 17 points in the first half.

However, Tulane put up an even more dominating performance. The Green Wave shut out Southeastern Louisiana, beating them 52-0 and never really allowing the game to be competitive.

Best Bets for Kansas State vs Tulane

Defenses Might Be Too Much to Handle

Based on last week’s games, I don’t expect many points to be scored in this matchup. That could make the under in the points total the best option for college football picks, with the line set at 47½.

Both teams completely dominated their opponents last week. Sure, they faced teams from the FCS, but what happened on the field was impressive. Kansas State allowed six points but did not give up a touchdown. Even more impressive is that the Wildcats held their opponent to 134 total yards. Furthermore, they held Tennessee-Martin under 100 passing and 40 rushing yards.

On the other sideline will be Tulane’s defense, and whenever you hold an opponent scoreless, that is something to pay attention to. While Southeastern Louisiana did end up with 201 yards on the Green Wave, a forced fumble and an interception returned 100 yards for a touchdown were some of the team’s defensive highlights.

Bet On This Pick: Under 47½

Running Game to Help Tulane Cover Spread

In addition to the defense being a massive reason this game should hit the under, both of the team’s offensive play styles could also help out. Kansas State and Tulane will be run-first teams this season, which will help the game hit the under. That could also help the Green Wave cover the college football spread with the line set at +9.

It is easy to see why Kansas State will be a run-first team this season and that’s because of the talent in their running back room. Last week, DJ Giddens rushed for 124 yards on 13 carries but failed to get into the end zone. However, Giddens averaged 9.5 yards per carry as the team totaled 283 rushing yards.

Giddens is one of many rushing threats for the Wildcats roster. Dylan Edwards only had five carries for 43 yards and a touchdown, but he showed versatility with two receptions and another score. On top of that, Avery Johnson only had 37 rushing yards, but he is considered a run-first quarterback. Last season, in limited play, he had 35 pass attempts compared to 45 rushes for 225 yards and six touchdowns.

Like Kansas State, Tulane will focus on running the ball to its advantage in college football odds. Last week, the Green Wave attempted only 17 passes compared to 39 rushes for 241 yards. It seems pretty clear that Makhi Hughes will be the bell cow with 14 attempts for 59 yards and one touchdown against Southeastern Louisiana. Last season, Hughes had 1,376 yards and should be in for another big year.

However, while other running backs got fewer carries, they still had a lot of success. Ty Thompson only had four carries but found the endzone twice. Shaadie Clayton-Johnson would also make the most out of his four carries, going for 48 yards.

The best option for college football betting should be the under for this game. However, if you wanted to make a pick against the spread, pick Tulane to cover. With both teams having strong defenses and leaning heavily on the running game, don’t expect there to be a lot of points in this matchup. That should help Tulane cover the spread and keep the game within one score.

Bet On this Pick: Tulane +9
