The No. 5 Texas Longhorns are coming off a loss for the first time in the 2024 season, and they have to hit the road to face another ranked team, the Vanderbilt Commodores, on Saturday. The Commodores are ranked No. 25 in the country and are on a three-game winning streak that started with a home upset of then-No. 1 Alabama.
Texas fell at home to Georgia last week, knocking it out of the top spot in the Top 25 polls. These two teams are tied for fifth place in the SEC standings with Missouri with identical 2-1 league marks, while two other teams – Georgia and Tennessee – each have just one loss in the conference as well.
BetUS Sportsbook has made the Longhorns 18-point favorites in this game. A moneyline bet for a straight-up Texas victory has -1000 odds, while Vanderbilt is +650 to pull off the upset. The over/under for the contest has been set at 53½ points.

2 Factors to Consider When Betting Texas vs Vanderbilt in Week 9
1. Longhorns Offense Needs to Get Back in Gear
The Texas Longhorns‘s offensive attack has been one of the best in the nation this season, but it was put into neutral by Georgia last week, which forced four turnovers, including three by quarterback Quinn Ewers (one interception, two fumbles lost). Texas managed just 29 yards on the ground and scored a season-low 15 points in the loss.
The Longhorns’ defense also had an off game, allowing 30 points, though even with that, Texas is still the top team in points allowed per game with just 9.7. But after rolling through the first six games of the season, the Longhorns do know that they can’t afford another slip-up, though the expanded College Football Playoff field made the loss a little easier to take.
“The beauty of this format is losing a game like this doesn’t kill you,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian told college football news outlets about making the CFP. “Everything we want is still in front of us.”
But to get to where they want to go, the Longhorns have to get back to winning, which starts against the surprising Commodores.
Vanderbilt has been winning over the last three games, but it hasn’t exactly been dominating. Even a home game against non-conference foe Ball State was just a 10-point winning margin last week.
If the Commodores want another big upset, they must play better on both sides of the ball against Texas.

2. Commodores Need a More Consistent Attack
Since putting 40 points on Alabama in their upset win, the Commodores have scored a total of 44 points in their last two games. Even if Vanderbilt’s defense can slow down the Longhorns on Saturday, it will need more scoring to be able to get the win.
That means senior quarterback Diego Pavia must come up with another big-time performance. Pavia has thrown for 1,391 yards and 11 touchdowns while also leading the Vanderbilt Commodores in rushing with 470 yards and three scores.
The New Mexico State transfer was under control and efficient against Alabama, and he needs to get back to that form against the Longhorns.

The Georgia offense didn’t overwhelm the Texas defense, finishing with just 283 yards of total offense. But the Bulldogs took advantage of the Longhorns’ miscues to score early and often.
If Texas can avoid the costly turnovers, it should be able to cruise in this one. But a couple of mistakes could open the door to another Vanderbilt surprise.
It’s hard to bet against the Longhorns, especially as they come off a loss and should be even more focused. Still, 18½ points is a lot against a team that has already shown it can stand up against the best in the conference and do well.
If you decide to bet online with the point spread, take the home team, as Vanderbilt should be able to keep it within a couple of touchdowns.
