Tulane vs South Alabama: Expect Low Total in NOLA

Whatever head coach Willie Fritz says goes for the Tulane Green Wave football team, who will look to start the 2023 season with a bang. Playing host to another college football odds favorite from last season, the South Alabama Jaguars, the stage is set for what could be one of the better games in Week 1.

Starting out the season at the AP Poll’s No.24, Tulane will be hitting their home turf looking for a dominating win mirroring last season’s success, but could the team be in for one of the first big upsets of the season?

College Football Betting Fans, Tulane Ready for the Heat

Admit it, you were a fan of Tulane football last season. We all were at one point. The Green Wave took the AAC by storm, turning NCAA football odds makers on their heads after beating ranked teams like Cincinnati and UCF en route to the conference title. But with that not being enough, Tulane closed out 2022-2023 by beating Caleb Williams’ USC Trojans in one of the best games – if not the best – of the Bowl season, during last year’s Cotton Bowl.

Now starting the 2023-24 season, Tulsa is all in for riding high again, even after losing some key pieces to their defensive scheme. It will be up to QB Michael Pratt to lead this team just like he did last season, but now with even more poise, as last season’s star RB Tyjae Spears gears up to make his pro debut with the Tennessee Titans next weekend.

A strong performance from Pratt won’t necessarily ensure a win for Tulane, but it will work wonders, especially as the team’s rebuilding defense will have its hands full trying to stop South Alabama’s dominating offense.

Consistency Key to South Alabama’s Success

This team knows balance like no other on all sides of the ball. After bringing back the majority of key players from last season, for South Alabama, consistency and growth will be the two main keys to another successful season, something that could see their sports betting value take a fast rise.

Having their star QB, WR, and RB come back for the season should work wonders for a Jaguars team looking to route Tulane on the road. Carter Bradley should be able to hit the ground running at Yulman Stadium on Saturday, with Devin Voisin and Caullin Lacy as his two go-to targets. Add La’Damian Webb, the team’s top rusher last season, and this looks like a team ready to rip opponents a new one week in and week out.

Still, it will be up to the Jaguars’ defense to break Tulane’s offensive line and reach Pratt repeatedly if they wish to leave NOLA with the “W.”

South Alabama +6? Yes, Please

I’m sold on South Alabama going for the Sun Belt Conference title this season, even if it drops its first game against Tulane here. South Alabama is slated as the favorite to take their conference title at +290 in our college football lines page, and with a strong roster to back any claim, call me a believer.

Even with Tulane having the better all-around squad, college football spreads don’t lie, and the Jaguars at +6 is too good of a pick to let go, so take it and make some cash. You can thank me later.

Betting the Total? Go Under

Fans looking to bet online on this matchup should keep one thing in mind: Don’t expect a high-scoring affair. Even better, forget about a blowout win for any team. With both squads looking to score a pivotal first win in the season, the score could run tight, in the low twenties for both, with Tulane edging out South Alabama.

So take the Under 51½ and ride with the Green Wave to a win.
