The UCLA Bruins were coming off their first loss, and they fell behind early against the Stanford Cardinal, but running back Zach Charbonnet wasn’t about to let his team lose for a second straight week. Charbonnet tied his career high with 198 rushing yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the Bruins to a 38-13 blowout win over Stanford.
“I thought Zach played outstanding today,” UCLA coach Chip Kelly said after Saturday’s win. “He’s a three-down back. He can pick up pass protection, he’s a weapon coming out of the backfield and obviously, we saw what he’s like when he runs the football.“
The senior leads the Pac-12 with 964 rushing yards and has scored 10 touchdowns on the ground. He has a five-game streak of 100-yard rushing games and has also caught nine passes for 89 yards over the past two contests.
Senior quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson makes the UCLA offense go as well, though he’s coming off 199 passing yards in the win over Stanford. Thompson-Robinson has passed for 1,971 yards and 17 touchdowns this season while also rushing for 319 yards and five scores.
Arizona State Needing To Tighten Up Defense
The Arizona State Sun Devils have had their troubles, and the defensive side of the ball has been one of them. Even in a win last weekend against the Colorado Buffaloes, Arizona State allowed 34 points and 359 yards of total offense to a one-win squad, escaping with an eight-point victory.
The Sun Devils allow an average of 28.8 points and 401 yards of total offense a game, and that’s not going to lead to a victory if that trend continues against the UCLA Bruins this weekend.
