The Vanderbilt Commodores haven’t appeared in a bowl game since 2018, but they can become bowl-eligible this season with just one more win. Vanderbilt will try to get that win on the road this week when they visit the struggling Auburn Tigers for an SEC matchup.
The Commodores gave No. 5 Texas a run for its money last week before falling 27-24. Auburn is coming off a win over Kentucky that snapped a four-game losing skid.
The odds on BetUS Sportsbook favor the Tigers, who are listed as seven-point favorites. You can get Auburn at -250 on the moneyline. The over/under has been set at 47½ points.

2 Factors to Consider When Betting Vanderbilt vs Auburn
1. Commodores on the Edge of Great Season
Vanderbilt made some of the biggest college football news of the season with its upset of then-No. 1 Alabama on Oct. 5, and it almost added more with last week’s narrow loss to Texas. The Vanderbilt Commodores have three losses on the season, and two of them came to teams that were ranked in the AP Top 10 at the time, with a double-overtime setback to Missouri on Sept. 21 being the other.
It’s been a far cry from the team that lost at Georgia State just prior to the Missouri loss. Coach Clark Lea has his team believing it can contend in the SEC, feeling like this season is just the start of something big.
It helps that he has a quarterback like Diego Pavia running the show. The senior has passed for 1,534 yards and 13 touchdowns this season while also leading the Commodores in rushing with 537 yards and four scores. The New Mexico State transfer has pumped new life into the program and is hoping to take the next step with the team’s sixth win on Saturday.
Pavia has some history against Auburn coach Hugh Freeze, defeating Freeze-led teams twice when he was playing for the Aggies.
It may be Pavia’s arm that makes the difference in this one. Auburn ranks ninth in the SEC in pass defense, allowing 213.3 yards per game.
Vanderbilt is putting up 32.0 points per game this season, so the Tigers’ defense must be strong to keep the Commodores from getting on a roll in this one and beating the college football lines.

2. Tigers Hoping Thorne Can Finish Strong
Auburn quarterback Payton Thorne has had an up-and-down college career. From being a starter at Michigan State to transferring to Auburn for the last two seasons of his career, Thorne has fallen in and out of favor at his programs multiple times.
The senior was benched earlier in the season by Freeze, only to get his starting job back four games ago. Thorne has passed for 1,586 yards and 12 touchdowns on the season but also has seven interceptions. Only two of those interceptions have come since he regained the starting job, however, so he’s showing better judgment.
He’s also taking a beating, having been sacked 15 times over the last four games, including five in the win over Kentucky last week.
Vanderbilt hasn’t been known for getting to the quarterback much this season, tying for ninth in the SEC with 18 sacks. But if Thorne holds the ball too long, the Commodores could add to that number.
It would help if the Auburn Tigers could get another performance from Jarquez Hunter like they did last week. The senior running back rushed for 278 yards and two touchdowns in the Auburn victory. Hunter hadn’t reached even 100 yards in his previous four games and has only hit the century mark twice this season.

His 278 rushing yards are the third-best total by a Southeastern Conference player in the last five seasons and the fourth-best mark in Auburn history.@AuburnFootball pic.twitter.com/p2JBV5kY4c

Vanderbilt vs Auburn Best Pick: Bet the Underdog
The consistency of the Auburn offense has been lacking this season, but if the Tigers can put it together, they can hold off the upset bid of the Commodores.
But we don’t see it happening. Vanderbilt has been the better team this season, and we think it gets the straight-up win in this one. For my college football pick against the spread, take the Commodores.
