Conference (and divisional) opponents meet when the Virginia Cavaliers travel to Atlanta to meet the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Thursday night.
These teams had different starts, and have since gone in opposite directions.
Virginia began the season 2-1 in its non-conference schedule, but dropped its last three, all in conference. It’s last in the Coastal Division.
A slow start with Tech, 1-3 (1-2 in its non-conference slate). However, the Jackets have started to turn things after the dismissal of coach Geoff Collins, winning their past two. With a 2-1 conference record, Tech is second in the ACC Coastal.

Virginia’s Struggling Offense
Though the Virginia Cavaliers won two of their first three games, they’ve sputtered since.
Virginia’s struggled to get much going on offense, the bottom five in the ACC in both yards (356.8) and points (17.8) per game. The latter number is bottom two.
A dismal performance both passing (227.2 yards/game) and running (129.7 yards/game), rank fourth- and third-worst, respectively, in the ACC.
Quarterback Brennan Armstrong has regressed since last season, just a 55% completion percentage in Virginia’s six games.
UVA’s last loss (to Louisville) saw Armstrong end 24-of-34 (313 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions. Virginia finished with six rushing yards on 25 carries (that’s not a typo) and a touchdown in the home defeat, 34-17
Virginia will have to see improvement in their offense if they hope to win the conference.
Tech’s Offense Revitalized
Although Georgia Tech’s season was off to a slow start, the Yellow Jackets have played better in conference.
Tech dropped three of their first four games, averaging just 13.8 points over that span.
After that 1-2 getaway in non-conference play and failing offensively, Tech fired Collins, leaving Brent Key as the interim coach.
Georgia Tech has seen an improvement in its play, winning their last couple.
The Jackets averaged 24½ points (373 yards) in those past two, holding opponents to 20½ points (31.8 points in the first four games of the season).
Georgia Tech defeated Duke, 23-20 in an overtime surprise. Quarterback Jeff Sims had 227 passing yards (two interceptions), while also rushing for 95 yards.
Sims is questionable to play Thursday after getting injured in overtime. Key has appeared to be turning things around in Atlanta, meaning there’s reason to be optimistic ahead of this duel.
