It’s been a strange season for the Washington State Cougars, who are playing nearly an entire slate of non-conference games except for one against fellow Pac-12 holdout Oregon State on Nov. 23. Through it all, however, the Cougars have been successful, coming into this week with a 6-1 record, with that only loss coming against No. 17 Boise State.

Now they face the San Diego State Aztecs, who have been as up and down as a team can get. The Aztecs are 3-3, with a three-game losing skid and a two-game winning streak. San Diego State is 2-1 at home and is hoping to improve that mark against the visiting Cougars.

Washington State is a 14-point favorite according to the college football lines. A moneyline bet on the Cougars will get you -600 odds while the Aztecs are +450 for a straight-up win. The over/under has been set at 58 points.

This should be an interesting contest, so let’s break it down a bit to help you make your college football picks for the game.

2 Bets to Make on Washington State vs San Diego State

1. Cougars Keep Rolling Against Aztecs

Washington State has been a tough team to stop all season long, with sophomore quarterback John Mateer leading the way for the Cougars. Mateer has passed for 1,896 yards and 16 touchdowns this season, though he does have six interceptions.

Mateer is also a threat when running the ball, pacing the Cougars with 533 yards and eight scores. He had a dominant performance in Washington State’s win over Hawaii last weekend, passing for 295 yards and three touchdowns and rushing for 34 yards and two scores.

While it may seem like having one player doing so much would make it easy for the defense to hone in on him, Mateer has been able to keep the Cougars’ offense balanced and unpredictable. One problem has been sacks, with Mateer getting taken down 18 times in just the last four games, including eight in the loss against Boise State.

The Aztecs will try to feed the ball to senior running back Marquez Cooper to put together sustained drives that keep the Cougars’ offense off the field. Cooper has rushed for 670 yards and six touchdowns this season, with 307 yards and four scores over the last three games.

San Diego State just hasn’t been consistent enough offensively to think it can hang with the Cougars for the whole game, so we like Washington State to win and cover the 14-point NCAA football spread and come away with the easy victory.

2. Over the Betting Pick in High-Scoring Shootout

While Cooper is the top weapon for the Aztecs offensively, the team’s passing game has started to come alive thanks to the play of freshman Danny O’Neil. In his first season of collegiate football, O’Neil has taken the reins of the SDSU offense, passing for 1,045 yards and six touchdowns.

He’s been able to avoid too many mistakes, throwing just one interception, and he’s started to heat up over the last three games, passing for over 220 yards and one touchdown in each.

O’Neil and the passing game are going to need to provide some kind of threat to keep the Cougars from focusing solely on stopping Cooper, so we like Washington State to get some points on the board in this one in online betting.

Meanwhile, Washington State is ranked 15th in the country in scoring with 39.4 points per game and is tied for 19th in college football with 459.4 yards of total offense per contest. San Diego State is allowing 22.67 points per game, but that will likely go up after this contest.

As stated above, the total for this game is set at 58 points, and we like the over. The Cougars will do the bulk of the heavy lifting to get it there, but the Aztecs will play their part as well.

Make one of your college football predictions for this game on the over to hit.
