West Virginia Getting Right

After an 0-2 start, West Virginia has started to shift its season back in the right direction with back-to-back wins. The Mountaineers faced No.17 Pittsburgh in Week 1, losing 38-31, but did hold a lead in the fourth quarter. Against Kansas, they got out to a 14-0 lead but lost 55-42 in overtime.

The running game and defense have been the driving force of the last two victories, beating Towson (65-7) and Virginia Tech. The Mountaineers gave up just 180 total yards to Towson and limited the Hokies to 228. More specifically, they allowed 35 rushing yards, dominating the line of scrimmage against Virginia Tech.

Running backs CJ Donaldson and Tony Mathis Jr. have split the carries and have been a solid backfield duo. Donaldson has been the explosive threat, averaging 7.3 yards per carry with six touchdowns. Mathis has received six more carries but has 108 fewer yards.

Texas Almost Back

Head coach Steve Sarkisian is trying to bring Texas Longhorns back to its former glory, and it seemed like he was getting there. A one-point loss against No. 1 Alabama, in which the Longhorns appeared to be in the driver’s seat the whole game, was followed by a 41-20 victory over UTSA.

However, against UTSA, the cracks had already begun to show as they went into halftime tied at 17. The Longhorns dominated the second half through running back Bijan Robinson, who rushed for two of his three touchdowns and finished with 183 yards. The defense was shaky, allowing 408 yards and 29 first downs.

Since taking over for quarterback Quinn Ewers, last year’s starter, Hudson Card, has been decent. He threw for 161 yards and a touchdown against UTSA, and posted a solid 277 yards with three touchdowns and one interception against the Red Raiders.

The defense has been the weak point, allowing 479 yards and 31 first downs against Texas Tech. A missed game-winning field goal at the end of regulation and the fumble by Robinson in overtime led to the loss.

West Virginia vs Texas Betting Lines

West Virginia vs Texas Prediction

The line for this game was at nine points in favor of Texas but has shifted to 10. This is after a loss that featured crucial late-game mistakes and spotty defense.

This game might end up being much closer than expected, especially after what West Virginia’s defense showed it can do against the run game last week. The Longhorns had to go through the ground game due to their quarterback predicament. Quarterback JT Daniels has also been solid for the Mountaineers, which should give them more than enough to keep it a close game against the Longhorns.
