The Wyoming Cowboys pulled off one of the biggest upsets of Week 3 of the college football season. They used a late fourth-quarter touchdown to upend Air Force as the teams started Mountain West play.
Meanwhile, the BYU Cougars put forth one of the worst performances last Saturday when they were stomped by Oregon.
How will these teams respond after different games and which will cover the college football odds? Let’s take a closer look at the matchup for those who BetOnline.
Wyoming was a 17-point underdog against Air Force, but Wyoming Cowboys shocked the Falcons, 17-14. Air Force scored to take the lead midway through the fourth quarter, but Wyoming promptly responded.
The fact that neither offense did particularly well through the first three quarters made it startling that the teams produced touchdowns on back-to-back possessions.
However, Wyoming’s ability to immediately answer Air Force’s touchdown was a specific surprise. Wyoming limited Air Force’s complex, multi-formation offense to just 24 points last season.
The Cowboys retained their ability to handcuff Air Force’s attack, and this year, it was enough to secure not just a point spread win in the sportsbook but an outright win as well.
BYU scored a huge Week 2 win over defending Big 12 champion Baylor, so when the Cougars went to Oregon for Week 3, they were a target. And they did not handle the pressure of being a target.
BYU crumbled in Eugene, Oregon as the Ducks beat them 41-20. In truth, the Ducks – were leading 38-7 in the third quarter and inserted their backups.
The Ducks probably could have won that game by 45 points. BYU looked slow and out of position all game long.
Part of this is that Oregon played with great energy and passion, but the other part of the equation is that BYU looked physically and mentally drained after that overtime win over Baylor the previous week.
The team did not regather itself. It looked spent, as though the Baylor game took everything out of them.
This game against Wyoming, being played at night before a home crowd on campus, should revitalize BYU and increase the Cougars’ energy level.
