What Is a Papal Conclave?
A papal conclave takes place after the position of Pope becomes vacant, either by death or resignation. Following Pope Francis’ passing on April 21, cardinals from across the world will convene in the Vatican City to elect the new leader of the Catholic Church.
But while there are 252 cardinals, only 133 will be eligible to run for the highest office. Only cardinals under the age of 80 on the day of Pope Francis’ death will be eligible to run for office, while two cardinals will be unable to participate due to health issues.
