Pay Homage to O.J. Simpson’s White Ford Bronco: Bet on the Auction

O.J. Simpson is dead. But we can still bet on him from beyond the grave. In particular, there are betting lines on his White Ford Bronco, the car that changed America. If you’re under 30, you may have only heard of this vehicle’s infamy. This was Simpson’s escape car back on June 17, 1994. The “chase” changed American network television forever.

News stations widely covered this chase and it made plenty of rich old network-owning men even richer. Simpson was famous for many things at the time. He had awe-inspiring football skills and an even more spectacular off-field rap (we don’t endearingly say this). But perhaps his biggest “contribution” to American society will be his godfathering of reality television.

We’ll give half that credit to the White Ford Bronco, which is allegedly up for auction with the low price of $1.5 million.

O.J.’s White Bronco Auction: Own a Piece of American History

Reports indicate that Simpson’s White Ford Bronco could go for much more than its $1.5 million price tag. That’s why betting lines have the ‘over’ favored at -150. The only question becomes who’d pay for it? That might still be too hot to touch even if it’s been 30 years. It’s currently part of an exhibit at the Alcatraz East Crime Museum in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

“There are events in history that will always stick in people’s minds, and I think the O.J. chase is one of those for a large number of people,” Ally Pennington, the museum’s artifacts and projects manager told the New York Times.

Indeed, this White Ford Bronco will forever be associated with Simpson. More Americans may associate the two together more than Simpson and football. How many even know he played for the Buffalo Bills or won a Heisman Trophy? But almost everyone, including the “zoomers” knows of him and his ride-or-die.

“Kids who were born in the 2000s, even they know that’s O.J.,” Marcus Collins, a University of Michigan marketing professor, said of his students. “It’s just as salient as me showing the Twin Towers on fire. It definitely became etched in the zeitgeist because of all the contextual associations that we applied to it.”

And it’s not a coincidence that reality TV shows have since become America’s favorite brain cell destroyer. From Keeping Up with the Kardashians to Survivor, they all have to thank Simpson and the White Ford Bronco for starting it.

Reality TV Is and Will Always Be Peak TV

They call the television the “Idiot Box” and not the “Genius Box” for a reason. For the most part, the most entertaining things you watch are the dumbest ones. And reality TV unabashedly just made this clear. It’s a guilty pleasure for most folks. But America’s absorption with Simpson’s chase to his trial exposed it all.

The Simpsons trial “trained all these newsgathering institutions, from Court TV to the networks, on how they could have a single story become an entire business model during the life span of that single story,” said Robert Thompson, a television and popular culture professor at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School.

“If we want to call that reality TV, then certainly the O.J. Simpson trial was a master class taught by the media themselves, of how to build up interest and equity in a single story, and then use it across the board,” he continued.

Not everyone watches “television” now thanks to the Internet and streaming services. But reality TV continues to be among the most popular genres. They even have the American Reality TV Awards. Now, someone should start a petition to change the award to resemble the White Ford Bronco.
