Who Are the Betting Favorites to Be the Next Pope?
One thing’s for sure – a 267th Pope will be appointed in the near future. Who will that be, or when will that be? Only time will tell.
With that being said, there are two major frontrunners to become the most important person in the Catholic religion and its 1.4 billion followers. Luis Antonio Tagle (+150) and Pietro Parolin (+150) are the two favorites in the odds for the next Pope. Both have four decades of experience with the Church – Tagle was ordained in 1982, consecrated in 2001, and created cardinal in 2012, whilst Parolin did so in 1980, 2009, and 2014.
Tagle, a Filipino, is looking to become the first Pope from Asia since the Syrian Pope Gregory III (731-741). But as for Parolin, he is looking to become the first Italian since Pope John Paul I, who served as Pope from August 26, 1978, to September 28, 1978, before dying at the age of 65.
Who Are the Dark Horses?
Out of the 266 men who have occupied the highest office in the Catholic faith, 216 have come from Italy, 16 have come from France, while the most recent came from Argentina. However, there hasn’t been an African pope in over 1500 years since the Roman Empire ruled Tunisia.
That could be coming to an end very soon. The Ghanaian prelate Peter Turkson (+400) and the Guinean prelate Robert Sarah (+700) find themselves in the mix for the position, while Peter Erdo (+700) is seeking to become the first-ever Hungarian pontiff, and prelate Matteo Zuppi (+400) and archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa (+700) are both vying to end Italy’s half-century-long absence at the head of the Church.
When it comes to building your next Pope predictions, age is an important factor to take into consideration. After the relatively brief tenures of Pope Benedict XVI (8 years) and Pope Francis (12 years), the cardinals may be looking for a fairly younger option who could guide the Church into a new era. It’s why someone like Jean-Marc Avelline is worth taking a punt on at +1400. Born in French Algeria, the 66-year-old moved to France at the age of eight and has served as Archbishop of Marseille since 2019. Known for his welcoming stance on migrants and people of other faiths, Aveline could be a sleeper pick for the papacy.
