Aphelios continues LPL pick dominance in the Summer Split

After the first 2 weeks of the 2023 LPL Summer Split, the juggernaut region is already showcasing their own meta. Nevertheless one champion still maintains a 100% pick rate in the Chinese league after a total of 18 games played, Aphelios.

The hyper carry continues his dominance and priority in most drafts, mainly thanks to his late game power within Summoner’s Rift. The Weapon of the Faithful is technically the best bottom lane champion in pro play, but one thing is certain, LPL bot laners know the ins and outs better than any other region.

League of Legends champion Aphelios

Aphelios is the only champion with a 100 percent pick rate in the LPL after the first couple of fixtures at the 2023 Summer Split, according to League of Legends statistics website Oracle’s Elixir. He has been piloted by the best bot laners in the region, including: Top Esports’ Yu “JackeyLove” Wen-Bo, OMG’s Dai “Able” Zhi-Chun, and LNG Esports’ newly signed bot laner Chen “GALA” Wei. However, as mentioned above, Aphelios is “technically” the best bot lane champion right now, as he still records a rather low win rate with 33% thanks to his high pick rate.

Several squads have found better ways to deal with the late game juggernaut which has significantly lowered his win rate during the first set of matches. Aphelios overall usage has been a topic of controversy within the esports community, especially after his dominance in the recent Mid Season Invitational. The flexible bot laner was the most played champion throughout all lanes with a total of 46 games in the event, while recording the most kills of the competition at the hands of world class players.

The true master of this champion was JD Gaming’s superstar and veteran bot laner Park “Ruler” Jae-hyuk, who only played jinx or Aphelios all the way to the trophy, concluding with him achieving the most amount of damage in London. Bilibili Gaming’s bot laner Zhao “Elk” Jia-Hao went through a similar path, grabbing a tournament high 159 total kills while piloting Aphelios during 7 games.

The DPS heavy marksman can easily switch to a burst focus build while still maintaining a decent amount of crowd control, making him the most flexible ADC in the game. On top of that his team fighting prowess is more than enough to carry a late game teamfight if played correctly, something we have seen become a focus for most competitive teams around the world. Fans do expect a nerf coming in rather soon, however Aphelios is the dream champion for most competitive bot laners, making nerfs possibly not enough to dissuade them from playing him.
