Astralis to make a mid season change for the remainder of the 2023 season

Astralis has absolutely improved in the 2023 LEC Winter Split compared to all their previous seasons, by managing to advance into the group stage and finishing in 6th place, this being the highest placement the organization has achieved in their LEC history. Nevertheless, recently Astralis announced an unexpected roster change was coming.

The team has decided to bench mid laner Oliver “Dajor” Ryppa, as announced via their social media account. The German native has been allowed to look for a new home while Astralis continues to scout for possible prospects ready to start in the next split of the LEC.

Looking at all their previous seasons, Astralis normally finish at the bottom of the leaderboard, placing either 9th or 10th in 3 out of their first 4 splits in the LEC. They did manage to grab a joint 7th place in the 2021 LEC Summer Split, however it wasn’t enough to punch a ticket for a playoffs appearance. But in 2023, they finished in eighth place of the LEC Winter Season beating the likes of Fnatic for the spot, claiming their seat at the 2023 LEC Winter Groups as a reward.

In the 2nd part of the Winter Split, Astralis lost to MAD Lions in a tough series, but later on defeated Team BDS, this even record provided the opportunity for a rematch against the former for a place in the 2023 LEC Winter Playoffs stage. Sadly for Astralis fans, they lost 2-0 and were eliminated from contention for the 2023 Winter trophy.

Now taking a look at the player in question compared to others in the same position, Dajor was not having a true impact individually. In the 2023 LEC Winter Season, he recorded a 1.8 Kill to Death ratio, the worst among all mid laners alongside Fnatic’s Humanoid, via statistics from website Oracle’s Elixir. Going into the group stage, he had the 2nd worst KDA ratio of 3, barely above Vitality’s Perkz.

On paper statistics do tell a story, however organizations with less following or resources such as Astralis normally provide more time for young players to adjust. Nevertheless, it seems that advancing to the group stage as a team was not a true factor compared to Dajor’s individual underwhelming performances.

As of the moment, it remains unknown who will be Dajor’s replacement in the mid lane, with lower table organizations normally scouting for Korean imports or regional league talents to promote. However, with the 2023 LEC Spring Split starting rather soon on March 11, the announcement should be coming soon via their social media account.
