Best CSGO Matches Of All Time
Over the course of CSGO’s eleven years, esports fans have been treated to a number of truly legendary battles. Over the years, we’ve witnessed numerous teams enter their own eras, underdogs win major tournaments, and superstar players like s1mple, dev1ce, and ZywOo rise to the top and dominate the competition.
There are five battles that first come to mind when I think of the most legendary in the history of CSGO. I witnessed each one in person, and the things that made each unique remain etched in my mind. Without further ado, let’s go back in time and revisit some of the most memorable moments in the history of competitive Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
MLG Columbus 2016 – Luminosity Gaming vs Liquid
This contest was the only one in this list that wasn’t for the championship. I’ll never forget this CSGO match between two of the best teams ever; it was the best I’ve ever seen.
The legendary coldzera clip, considered by many to be the greatest CSGO highlight of all time, occurred during a crucial time for Luminosity, so of course I had to include it. Coldzera pulled off the impossible and killed the Liquid players with a vicious jumping no-scope collateral and then another no-scope while the Brazilians were trailing Mirage and needed to win six rounds to stay alive.
After coldzera’s incredible play, Luminosity were able to come back and win the game, defeating Mirage 19-15 and Liquid on Cache 19-16 to advance to the MLG Columbus championship match in April 2016. The Brazilian team would go on to defeat NAVI just 24 hours later to claim their first Major victory.
ELEAGUE Atlanta Major 2017 – Astralis vs VP
In those days, VP was inseparable from the highest levels of Polish Counter-Strike thanks to its legendary roster of players like TaZ, NEO, pashaBiceps, Snax, and byali. While Astralis were still saddled with the stigma of choking in major events, the veterans were still feared. That day, all I could think was that there was no way VP would lose to dev1ce and company in the grand finals of the ELEAGUE Atlanta Major in January 2017.
I was correct, but only up to a point. They were heavy favorites to win their second Major after VP’s 16-12 victory in Nuke. However, fans from all around the world saw history be made when Astralis triumphed 16-14 on Overpass and Train thanks to a masterful performance by Kjaerbye.
The grand finals were so compelling that ELEAGUE scheduled a rematch later that year with $250,000 on the line, and Astralis proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that they were no longer chokers. After taking the first map of the series, VP was swept in reverse for the second time in franchise history.
ELEAGUE Major Boston 2018 – FaZe vs C9
After starting the tournament with a disappointing 0-2 record in the Legends Stage, C9 had made a miraculous comeback to reach the playoffs. Even the most ardent North American fan would not have thought C9 would beat FaZe in the grand finals to earn the NA region its first Major trophy ever despite the fact that something unique was occurring with Stewie2K, Tarik, RUSH, autimatic, and Skadoodle during the competition. But records are meant to be shattered, and C9 had no intention of letting NA’s winless streak extend by another year.
In spite of widespread pessimism when C9 dropped their selection of Mirage, the team bounced back on Overpass and forced the series to Inferno, where I and hundreds of other CSGO fans were treated to one of the most exciting and suspenseful professional matches in history.
After taking a 15-11 lead, FaZe were unable to finish off C9 due to the latter’s formidable double AWP setup. The game went into overtime thanks to a couple of clutch baskets by Stewie2K. FaZe seemed like they were about to crack under the weight of being the tournament’s heavy favorites, while C9 held their cool with the support of the home fans.
As the game went into overtime, the series continued as C9 failed to seal the deal in the first six extra rounds, but they were destined to win the ELEAGUE Boston Major anyway and did it in overtime two.
