The 2025 LoL Esports Overhaul
The 2025 season will signal a watershed moment for League of Legends esports, with numerous substantial changes aimed at increasing competitiveness and audience engagement. The most significant change is the adoption of a three-split structure for all regional leagues. This will result in a more dynamic season, with three unique periods and more potential for teams to qualify for international events. The international tournament calendar for 2025 will also be revamped. After the First Stand in South Korea, teams will prepare for MSI in Canada and Worlds in China, giving fans exciting events to look forward to throughout the year. Each tournament will feature teams that have qualified through their respective regional leagues, with playoffs determining the best teams for each international event.
Several regional leagues are uniting to create more competitive and coordinated competitions. For example, the LCS, CBLOL, and LLA will combine to form a single superleague in the Americas, with two conferences. Meanwhile, the LCK will hold a new Cup tournament at the start of the season, with the winner receiving a spot in the First Stand. The mergers will lower the number of top tier teams from 80 to 61, intensifying the battle.
The top leagues aren’t the only ones undergoing changes. Tier-two competitions like the ERLs and Americas League will also introduce the three-split format. This shift will provide more opportunities for emerging teams to compete and potentially qualify for the major leagues. Teams from regions like Southeast Asia will also face new challenges and opportunities, as their tier-two leagues are restructured to allow for promotion to the top leagues.
