Can Boombl4 Bounce Back To The Top With 1Win?
By the end of 2021, Boombl4 had risen to the top of the world. He was the in-game leader of the No. 1 squad, had won seven tournaments that year, had won an Intel Grand Slam, and had lifted the trophy at the first post-pandemic Major in Stockholm without dropping a single map.
Natus Vincere was set to create an era that could rival that of prime Astralis at the turn of the year, backed by a wealth of talent on a roster that included the best player in the world. There was also no clear challenger who appeared to be poised to take them on.
Boombl4 was removed from Natus Vincere’s active lineup in May 2022 due to “high reputational risks for the club.” Meanwhile, the team had fallen from first place in the world rankings due to the rise of FaZe and the external circumstances of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which had put enormous pressure on the entire roster.
The reasons for Boombl4’s departure from the team became clear very soon. He was in the middle of a divorce from the woman he proposed to only months before after winning the Stockholm Major, and shortly after his removal, his soon-to-be ex-wife shared a compromising video of him on social media.
It was a terrible predicament in which the young leader found himself. Not only had his team’s form suffered for reasons far beyond their control previous to his removal, but he had his own career derailed by someone close to him.
Boombl4 ended his temporary exile by joining 1WIN nine months after his livelihood was threatened. While his new team is not a tier one powerhouse like Natus Vincere, it seemed inevitable that Boombl4 would have to take a step back in order to return to the competitive scene.
Aside from G2, 1WIN may be one of the most intriguing teams he could have chosen. Not only did the roster house one of the game’s most exciting young stars, the stunningly consistent Denis “deko” Zhukov, but it also housed a solid tier two performer in Aleksandr “TRAVIS” Timkiv.
When looking at how 1WIN plays, it becomes obvious that Boombl4 has joined a team with potential, especially when looking at their T-side play. Of course, the team occasionally employs a default attack strategy, with Boombl4 frequently serving as part of the map control pack, but there is a great deal of variation in how 1WIN approaches offense.
Despite fielding a revamped roster that has only been together for a couple of months, this new-look 1WIN has been performing well with Boombl4 amongst their ranks: they have a 14-8 record in the matches they have played thus far, which makes for a healthy 64% win rate, and they have beaten some very tough opposition, including FORZE.
As 1WIN enters the RMR, Boombl4 now has his first opportunity to show how he will perform against the best opposition and a fantastic opportunity to show that he can return to the top echelons of CS with a new team.
It’s difficult to envision a better chance than the qualifier in Denmark, especially given that their group will have only six top 20 teams compared to ten in the other. Furthermore, Hooch’s players appear to have an even first matchup against the Bad News Eagles.
