Cloud 9 continues slump, while Vitality get off to a great start – CS GO IEM Rio Major
The Challengers Stage of the IEM Rio Major just witnessed one of the grand upsets in CS GO history sadly for Cloud 9 fans, the Aussies Grayhound Gaming defeated the CIS juggernaut and tournament favorite Cloud 9.
Grayhound Gaming took down their heavily favored enemies in a dramatic overtime battle which ended 19-17, with the best-of-one matchup victory helping the Australians gather some momentum against further tough opposition.

Alistair “aliStair” Johnston pushed his way through regular rounds on Dust 2, with a pause period during overtime. This is where the rest of the squad helped him fill the gap against the giants. Dmitry “sh1ro” Sokolov and Abay “HObbit” Khasenov simply couldn’t stop Grayhound’s teamwork play which ultimately overpowered their team on the CT side.
This best-of-one game should light a fire under Cloud 9’s bottoms, as they were looked as heavy favorites to win the event and currently stand 0-2. If they lose one more match, the CIS squad will be out of Challengers, which is sure to break everyone’s tournament Pick’ems and predictions.
Grayhound now advances with a 1-1 record, meaning they will have to take on another CS GO squad with the same scoreline on their next matchup.
Many had predicted Grayhound to bomb out of the tournament with a 0-3 record and ultimately be sent home, with it being one of the most popular IEM Rio Major Pick’em predictions. This win could be the light that gets the Aussie CS GO roster continues with confidence against their next opponents.
As for Imperial Esports, they tried their best to make a comeback against Vitality in the Challengers Stage of the IEM CSGO Rio Major, but the international team and their stars showed their teamplay and quickly closed down any possible avenues for the Brazilians.
Vitality claimed their 1st official victory at the Brazilian Major after defeating FalleN and his teammates with a 16-9 score on map Inferno. For most of the match, the game was absolutely in favor of Vitality, though the hosts started to gain some traction with a couple of consecutive rounds. Nevertheless, their momentum wasn’t enough against ZywOo’s mechanical prowess.
The first half was a display of pure domination from Vitality, who started on the CT side with incredible kill trading in small choke points such as apartments.
After the Brazilians lost the second pistol round, it seemed like all was over for Imperial. But the hosts started picking up some rounds afterward with the home crowd screaming their lungs out, to hopefully help their fellow countrymen. In the 24th round it all changed, Imperial were in a favorable three vs one situation, but the enemy left was ZywOo, who absolutely outclassed them one by one ultimately taking the best of one.
