Cloud 9 grabs first win in finals rematch against Golden Guardians

After the controversial 2 week delay thanks to the possible player walkout, the 2023 LCS Summer Split started with an absolute banger of a rematch between the Spring Split finalists, Cloud 9 and Golden Guardians. Even after having extra time for Golden Guardians to adapt and improve, sadly the game ended with the same result as in the Spring Split, with a Cloud 9 win to start the season.

Both Cloud 9 and Golden Guardians are 2 of the few organizations to keep the same squad from the Spring Split, and their finals rematch seemed pretty even on paper. Back in the finals, Cloud 9 managed to sustain GGS’ pressure to close out the series with a 3-1 scoreline. However this time around GGS managed to have control of the early/mid game, with them sadly falling off in the late game thanks to incredible plays from Cloud 9’s bot laner Berserker.

Looking at the first 25 minutes of the game, both Cloud 9 and Golden Guardians were able to propose several plays around the map, with the latter grabbing a small momentum advantage in the mid game. However the overall gold lead did not surpass 2000, with GGS not being able to extend their lead enough to pressure the Blues. Soon after, Cloud 9’s double ADC composition popped off once they achieved their item powerspike plus Milio’s buffs being thrown at them on cooldown.

The key for Cloud 9 was Berserker’s Zeri, a champion that has become synonymous with the Korean superstar. In a mid game teamfight Cloud 9’s bot laner went absolutely ballistic against GGS’ backline, cleaning them up in a matter of seconds. The incredible play led to a Baron kill and a base push that gave Cloud 9 their first victory of the Summer Split.

Berserker finished the game with a 5/0/3 scoreline, with him in the hunt for yet another MVP award. Nevertheless, he could not have done this without the help of Zven’s Milio, who constantly blocked any possible engagement coming from Golden Guardians’ top side.

This time around, the LCS will have more matches per week in order to make up for the 2 week delay, with a total of 6 weeks to finish the regular season. The situation might favor or impair the teams, especially the ones who have yet to find their mojo at the start of the split.

Cloud 9’s next set of opponents is Dignitas and TSM, two organizations that sadly did not manage to enter the postseason back in the Spring Split, with the Blues looking to at 2 more victories to their tally this season.
