CS2 Austin Major EU qualifiers start with a bang

  • EU has suffered major roster changes in the last couple of weeks.
  • Several favorites have stumbled early on.
  • They have set a new system in place instead of the RMRs.

The MRQ for the BLAST.tv Austin Major is officially underway, featuring a total of 16 lineups competing for the final spots in the tournament set to start in 2 months. This new system takes the place of the earlier RMRs, as the MRQs will now take place fully online, with organizations already receiving direct invitations to the main event. New format make Astralis slip

The first set of fixtures within the MRQ have already painted a general picture, mainly that the prospects for both Astralis and Fnatic are unclear. These teams were considered strong contenders to qualify for the event, yet they ended up in a 1-1 bracket after disappointing losses to OG and BC.Game in their opening matches. Tomorrow’s games could go either way, but being in this position as favorites is not ideal.

If they fail to qualify, it would mark Astralis’s fifth consecutive Major absence, which could have serious financial consequences for the team. They managed to recover from their initial loss by defeating Jame’s PARIVISION team, but they need to establish more consistency among their riflers to avoid another setback. Fnatic used to be a well established organization in Counter Strike, and they usually push for a spot on Majors. They made it to the PW Shanghai Major last year, but unfortunately, they didn’t qualify for Copenhagen beforehand. For Fnatic, it’s more about keeping themselves afloat, while they may not win the event, being present is essential for them economically.

Heroic stand above the rest

Things improved a bit for OG and HEROIC, as both teams are now just one best-of-three victory away from securing a spot in the BLAST.tv Austin Major this June. Although they find themselves in the same position heading into tomorrow, their motivations differ. HEROIC has faced a rocky road recently, but qualifying for the BLAST Austin Major would validate their commitment to nurturing young talent. While they may still be far from winning the trophies they aspire to, making it to the Major is a solid starting point.

Another organization that hit the ground running was OG. It’s been a long time since they’ve been in this position, but their investment in local players like nicoodoz and Buzz seems to be an incredible decision on their part. They even managed to defeat the aforementioned Astralis on their way to the 2-0 group, which was rather pleasing for ex player Buzz.
