Doublelift reveals LoL drama

Veteran Yiliang “Doublelift” Peter Peng of North America has once again shocked the League of Legends community by revealing that he was prevented from rejoining Team Liquid during the most recent off-season. As previously reported, Doublelift announced his retirement from competition during the off-season, citing a lack of financial and competitive incentive. Instead, he returned to streaming. Whenever co-streaming the LCS Spring Split on March 9, Doublelift discussed his aspirations to assemble a formidable squad at Team Liquid and how he believed Dodo had ended his intended third return to competitive leagues. Over the next few days, there were allegations of lying, leaks of private messages, and a disgruntled fan base demanding clarification. After finishing the 2023 League of Champions season with 100 Thieves, Doublelift declared his 2nd retirement from the competitive League, saying that he felt he had achieved everything he had set out to do in League pro play, barring winning a World championship. But plans were still afoot at Team Liquid during the offseason. They wanted Doublelift back in order to compete against the best in the world with a “Exodia” squad.

According to Peng’s initial account, co-owner Steve Arhancet initially made contact with him in the off-season. Steve wanted to reassemble the Liquid team, and he wanted Peng’s assistance. In his testimony, Peng stated that if he were to continue competing, he would like to have the best players on the team form a NA super team. The player Peng wished to play with, Joseph Joon “Jojopyun” Pyun, was the most notable member of this lineup. Nevertheless, Liquid had still not moved on Jojopyun after weeks of discussions, during which Doublelift had tentatively reached out to find out where Jojopyun was inclined towards.Jojopyun inquired about Doublelift during Dodo’s final call with him, since he had not been brought up in the conversation. Dodo was reported to have stated that Doublelift could only join Liquid if Dodo quit or was fired.

Dodo reacted quickly after this went viral, saying that Doublelift had chosen to disseminate false information. He stated that he had had six or seven conversations with Jojopyun and that he had in fact been in talks with him since September. He claimed that in the end, Jojopyun chose Cloud9 because using Berserker was his top concern. He said that Doublelift’s sole desire was Jojopyun, which is why things didn’t work out. Additionally, he asserted that there was complete transparency between him and Steve and said that Doublelift was spreading false information about what transpired. Liquid ultimately decided to go with a different core of Korean players, keeping three of their best players and adding two more, Jeong “Impact” Eon-young and Eom “UmTi” Seong-hyeon. Not at all like the “Exodia” team Doublelift had in mind for Liquid.

Unless he is convinced differently by the formation of another LCS superteam, Doublelift’s come back to competitive League is now very unlikely. Jojopyun has pledged loyalty to Cloud9. In terms of Dodo and Liquid, the 2024 squad just managed to finish in the top 4 during the regular season, and later this week they will take on FlyQuest, the top seed, in their very first playoff match.
