ESports Betting Update

The COVID-19 outbreak has put most of the sports industry at a standstill, which is not only bad news for the fans of sports but also sports bettors, who are put in a position where their betting venture is either severely limited due to lack of any sports events or outright halted.

The esports industry was not immune to the coronavirus outbreak either, with a plethora of major events either canceled or indefinitely postponed, however, due to the nature of esports, which can be played online, both fans of esports titles and those who bet on esports events will be happy to hear there is plenty of esports action to tune in and bet on.

Although Dota2 has unfortunately seen its third Major tournament of the season postponed and the fourth outright cancelled, which effectively means there will be no top-tier Dota2 competition for at least two months, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and League of Legends, decided the show must go on(line).

The European League of Legends Championship (LEC), as well as its North American counterpart (LCS), have followed the footsteps of the Chinese league (LPL) and transitioned to online play, while CS:GO tournaments in ESL Pro League Season 11 and FLASHPOINT completely revamped their tournament formats in a bid to offer the teams to compete online.

Due to the transition to online games, assessing the games and searching for solid betting options also takes a different approach, as there are many more factors that need to be considered. One of which is the teams’ ping or internet latency that is non-existent in LAN play, but can and will be a huge factor in any online top-tier esports fixture, where any millisecond counts.

Many teams will feel the consequences of that and many games will be affected by unfair playing conditions, which gives esports bettors a great opportunity to take advantage of the situation and look for inflated odds offered on underdogs, who will enjoy an advantage of better playing conditions.

One such game, which might fly under the radar of many is a fixture between two European LoL teams in Origen and Team Vitality, who are set to lock horns on the Summoner’s Rift this Friday, March 20 at 12:00 PST.

Origen

entering Week 8 of the competition with 10-4 record, which sits them at the second spot in the league, while Vitality are the undisputed weakest team in LEC with a 1-13 record next to their name. Although Origen are widely regarded as one of the strongest teams in Europe and possibly one of the top-10 teams in the world, they will be entering Friday’s bout with a massive handicap. The whole squad of the Danish esports organisation, have found themselves stranded in their headquarters in Copenhagen, meaning they will have to play their games from their home country. Vitality, on the other side, have their gaming house located in the capital of LEC (Berlin), giving them a significant advantage when it comes to a better internet connection to LEC servers.

While Vitality don’t have a lot going for them in terms of their individual quality, it’s the latency issues Origen will have to deal with that will disrupt the flow of the game enough to give Vitality a fighting chance. A win for the French squad might still be a shock for many, however, if Lucas “Cabochard” Simon-Meslet and co. will ever have a chance of upsetting the Danish juggernauts or at least keeping the match close, it will be this Friday.
