FaZe win IEM Chengdu 2024

In the tournament’s championship match, FaZe defeated MOUZ 2-0 on Overpass (13-10) and Nuke (13-6) to secure their place as the IEM Chengdu champions. Not only was it David “Frozen” Čerňanský’s first championship with FaZe, but it was also his first against his old team since he joined in late 2023. The international team hadn’t raised a trophy since the 2nd event in the streak, the CS Asia Championships in Shanghai, where they also defeated MOUZ in the final, but they had won their 3rd CS2 title on LAN in a run of 7 straight finals stretching back to IEM Sydney. After a disappointing PGL Major Copenhagen 2024, FaZe Clan was determined to take home the championship. Regretfully, they were forced to make a quick diversion following Astralis’ defeat in the second round of Group Stage. They defeated C9, FlyQuest, Team Liquid, and Astralis during their unbeaten run to the Grand Finals. In three 2024 tournaments, it was the team’s 3rd Grand Finals appearance. A notable presence in the latest history of Counter-Strike is MOUZ. Sadly, they haven’t been winning as frequently. They defeated Team Liquid, FURIA Esports, and TYLOO in Chengdu to earn the top seed from Group A. To get to the Grand Finals, they overcame G2 Esports in the Semifinals. Both teams enter the series with a high win percentage, having won 8 of the previous 10 games. Regretfully, MOUZ has yet to prevail in CS2 over FaZe Clan.

It seemed that MOUZ had moved past their LAN problems in time for the championship match at the Wuliangye Chengdu Performing Arts Centre. The German team, which was frequently chastised for performing poorly in front of an audience, shocked everyone by defeating G2 in the semi-final. Performing Arts Center’s laid-back vibe seemed to fit them better than the typical Major-level pressure. Conversely, FaZe appeared exhausted following their recent Major run and an exhausting run of finals games. Still, FaZe went into the championship round much favored. With a commanding 12-2 map advantage and a perfect 6-0 record versus MOUZ in recent head-to-head matches, Finn “karrigan” Andersen’s team could not have asked for a more seasoned opponent in the IEM Chengdu Grand Final. The writing was seemingly on the wall, and neither side’s combat yielded any unexpected results.

MOUZ, a group renowned for their power on Ancient, chose Overpass in its place. This gamble backfired, as FaZe shut down MOUZ’s offense, allowing them to only score one opening kill (against pistols) during the entire pistol round, giving them a commanding 8-4 lead at the half. MOUZ was hoping to redeem themselves on Nuke, even though they had chosen Overpass and lost handily. Nevertheless, FaZe dispelled any skepticism with a commanding 6-0 run, even though they began on the weaker T-side. With their foot firmly planted on the accelerator, the eventual IEM Chengdu champions gave their opponents a mountain to climb. With one map remaining, FaZe demonstrated their power by finishing 13–6 decisively on Nuke to take home the trophy.
