FURIA Dominate Fnatic in First Round Of EPL S17 Playoffs

FURIA defeated fnatic 2-0 in the ESL Pro League Season 17 playoffs to claim their first victory. The Brazilians won the first meeting between the two orgs in more than three years, with their most recent meeting taking place in October 2019 at StarSeries i-League Season 8.

The Andrei “arT” Piovezan-led squad still has a long road ahead of them if they want to reach the quarter-finals as they are set to face Finn “karrigan” Andersen’s FaZe in the round of 12. On Wednesday, the two squads will meet for the first time this year, offering FURIA the opportunity to snap a four-match losing record to the Europeans.

fnatic’s time in Malta came to an end with their latest setback. During their EPL run, the European mix did not particularly stand out, as they barely qualified for the playoffs after a nail-biting match against Eternal Fire, but did not capture any more memorable victories. Their other victories in the group stage were against MIBR and IHC, two teams ranked substantially lower than them.

fnatic won their first pistol round on Ancient, but FURIA swiftly retaliated with a successful force-buy attack on the A site. The Brazilians then took four more rounds on the bounce as Kaike “KSCERATO” Cerato made his presence known on the T side with several multi-frags, cruising to a 1.64 rating and 16-8 K-D ahead of the break. William “mezii” Merriman and company recovered late in the half, especially as Nico “nicoodoz” Tamjidi began to fire on all cylinders on the A site, salvaging a 7-8 scoreline for fnatic.

The Europeans took the lead briefly in the second half but FURIA halted their progress on the B site. fnatic were repelled four more times from the same bombsite before changing their tactics, falling behind as arT and Yuri “yuurih” Santos came to life on the CT side. The Brazilians kept their cool late in the match and won the final three rounds convincingly to win the opening 16-13.

Mezii’s men got off to a terrific start on Anubis by dominating the first five T rounds, putting a solid buffer between themselves and FURIA in the early portions of the map. A triple kill from yuurih gifted the Brazilians their first round and allowed arT and Rafael “saffee” Costa to bring out the double-AWP setup on the CT side. The two snipers tormented fnatic from then on, powering an unbeaten nine-round streak on the defense, which comfortably put FURIA ahead before the break.

fnatic threatened a comeback in the second half as they equalized the scores at 12-12 on the back of Freddy “KRIMZ” Johansson’s performance on the CT side. The Brazilians had more experience on the map over the last three months, and it showed as they managed to pull together their offense late in the match to take back control. A saffee 1vs2 clutch on round 26 switched the momentum in favor of FURIA, allowing them to take the series 16-13.
