G2 conquer IEM Dallas over Vitality

G2 Esports accomplished the unthinkable and took home their first trophy of the year following a week of intense competition. Few predicted G2 to get out of the group stage at a tournament like this, when there were only three playoff slots available per group and both groups were full of talented players. Fewer still thought they had a chance to win. Continue reading this article for the best information on esports predictions!

But one thing is for sure: Stewie2K, the guy who won the Boston Major with Cloud9 back in 2018, contributed to the entire arena’s cheers for them. This was arguably the most notable victory for a NA team playing on NA turf, if that historic win is taken out of the picture.

Stewie2k as a stand-in

What was once only a fantasy came to pass. And G2 won their inaugural CS2 tournament, surpassing expectations despite fielding a stand-in. The team’s in-game commander Rasmus “HooXi” Nielsen was replaced by Jacky “Stewie2K” Yip when they first arrived at the competition. Even though the move first appeared arbitrary, G2-Stew will live on in memory as one of the pinnacles of Stewie2k’s career.

G2 overcame Vitality and FaZe Clan on their individual routes to glory. There were two other candidates. Furthermore, they defeated the event’s dark horse, the sizzling 9z, under the direction of Nikola “NiKo” Kovač. It would be unfair to the rest of G2 if people spent all of our time discussing the Stewie story. At the height of their abilities, NiKo and m0NESY combined to create a powerful Counter-Strike phenomenon that Vitality was utterly helpless to stop.

Match Recap

The grand final got underway on Inferno, where both teams gave amazing performances. G2 led 7–5 at the half. Similar to the first half, the second half favored Vitality and resulted in more rounds on the first map. The teams kept trading sets of three rounds apiece, which prompted another round of rounds in which G2 finally prevailed, scoring 19–16. Both teams had a nervous start to the second map, Anubis, with Vitality winning the first half 7–5. Vitality took the lead in the second half, winning five straight rounds to take a 12-5 lead. But G2 pulled off an amazing comeback, taking the match to extra rounds, where Vitality prevailed 16–13 after G2 won seven consecutive.
At the half, there was a 6-6 tie on the Nuke map due to an even start. With five rounds won in a row in the second half, G2 won 13–8 on this map.

Even though G2 leader m0NESY easily won the tournament MVP award with his 83-kill, 1.61-rated grand final performance, the top talk among fans was Stewie2K. Stewie, who last raised a Counter-Strike trophy with team Liquid at IEM Chicago nearly five years ago, accepted the trophy from the squad.

G2’s victory earned them $100,000 and a spot in the June 7–18, 2024, IEM Cologne 2024, which has a $1,000,000. The participation of Team Spirit, FaZe Clan, and Mouz has already been confirmed; the remaining teams will be chosen based on the Play-In stage and the ESL rating.
