G2 crashes out of MSI after defeat versus Bilibili Gaming

After recent international tournaments, most if not the entire League of Legends community was expecting the 2023 Mid-Season Invitational to be yet another dominant display by Eastern squads. However, against all odds, G2 Esports managed to somewhat match Bilibili Gaming’s momentum in their head-to-head series, with some fans even giving props to the LEC organization for their attempt.

Before the series started, most analysts expected BLG to sweep the floor in a dominant fashion, with the LPL squad’s aggression shining once more in the rift. Throughout the first match, bot laner ZhaoElkJia-Hao absolutely demolished G2, ultimately grabbing 12 kills and 12 assists to his name. Game 1 wasn’t even close, with BLG coming ahead via team fighting and early game pressure.

However, Game 2 was the starting point for a stronger G2 performance with the LEC organizations becoming more resilient throughout the mid-game. Support Mikyx delivered a devastating Janna tornado at Elk, which was enough for the entirety of G2 to pounce forward and kill the enemy carry. Soon after, top laner SergenBrokenBladeÇelik and jungle main MartinYikeSundelin took the game over thanks to great disruption in team fights, giving Game 2 to the home side. Nevertheless, BLG woke up for Games 3 and 4, the first was still a bit closer than expected but the final match was absolute dominance from the Chinese squad.

LEC fans are looking at the positives from the event, mainly G2’s jungle rookie first performance in the international stage. The 22-year-old was incredibly consistent throughout the series, while playing extremely different styles of champions, starting with the likes of Maokai and then having a stellar performance with Viego.

Unfortunately for EU fans, the rookie’s efforts were not enough to keep their MSI hopes alive, after a couple of missplays from bot laner Hans Sama and even an accidental stopwatch from BrokenBlade, the series was over for G2. The last game of the series was pure dominance by BLG in stark contrast to the previous 2 matches, which left fans with a sweet yet sour taste for the series.

As G2 flies back home, a single organization from the West remains alive: Cloud 9. The North American LCS champions will need to win against the Korean juggernauts Gen.G, captained by veteran jungler Peanut and led to battle by the lane king himself Chovy. This will definitely be a proactive series from both sides, with Kim “Peyz” Su-hwan battling KimBerserkerMin-cheol to see who is the best young Korean bot laner in the world, and of course a ticket to the semifinals of MSI.
