G2 Esports claim first LEC title of the year

G2 Esports started their 2023 League of Legends competitive campaign by grabbing their 10th LEC title in franchise history. The squad gave MAD Lions a rapid defeat by securing the final series of the Winter Split without losing a single match while also giving fans in the LEC studio and at home unusual draft compositions to be excited for. On top of winning the first LEC Shield trophy, they have also punched a ticket for the 2023 Mid Season Invitational, which is set to start in May hosted at London.

MAD Lions used to be the G2 killer back in 2021 after winning back to back titles in that LEC era, however this time around they simply couldn’t perform versus the European juggernauts. G2 claimed the top spot in their usual playstyle: proactiveness, unexpected draft picks, and stunning synergy between their members.

This being their 3rd consecutive LEC final, G2 dominated the server without much worry in the first 2 games of the series. With Yike’s pressure and Mikyx’s roams, G2 managed to control most of the jungle to take control of almost the entire map early on.

The first victory was pretty straightforward for G2, showcasing small bits of what was to come, and they absolutely delivered the full plate going into game 2.

It is important to mention that even if G2 was able to take control of the early game, MAD Lions were able to initiate small skirmishes from time to time keeping them afloat. But a couple of fights was not enough to suppress G2’s aggressive playstyle, who continuously was able to find engagements around objectives yielding MAD Lions’ composition unusable.

Game 3 was the closest match between both squads, with MAD Lions being the aggressors this time around in the early game thanks to ElYoyas ganks for his laners. They were in control throughout most of the game, looking to punish even the smallest of errors from G2.

Nevertheless, the story repeated itself in a decisive fight around top lane, G2 caught MAD Lions sleeping, ultimately winning a fight that gave them enough time to start a comeback. Skirmish after skirmish, G2 was able to push their advantage further, even after ElYoya miraculously stole the Baron.

For the 3rd consecutive time, the LEC Split Final finished 3-0, as G2 took their 10th LEC title, with fans waiting for more action from the EU representative in MSI 2023. The first Split of the year has just concluded, with teams already making adjustments in their roster set to be showcased when the season continues on March 11th with more LEC action.
