Icey signed with G2 following Americas Kickoff, giving him his first opportunity to establish himself in tier one after years of battling in the tier two scene. G2 lost to MIBR in an upset during the tournament’s play-in round, and they were therefore eliminated. Results from icy’s arrival to the squad were uneven, as G2 finished Stage 1 with a 3-3 record. They just managed to defeat Sentinels by two rounds in a tiebreaker, therefore this would be sufficient to get them into the playoffs. During the playoffs, they found their rhythm as Ice grew more at ease with the group. They would go to Masters Shanghai by defeating Cloud9 and KRÜ Esports, who were both 5-1 in their groups.
G2 was often neglected compared to the other competitors heading into Shanghai. They advanced past the Swiss round, going 2-0 overall, and Paper Rex selected them first. They would come to rue their decision as G2 defeated them in a stunning shock. They went on to win the event against Team Heretics a second time, rallying from a 2–11 deficit in the second map. This gave G2 a top-three finish; however, they lost their third battle versus Team Heretics within the lower finals and were easily trounced by the ultimate winners of Gen.G. They were the best-placing team from the Americas, coming in third.
G2 looking to bolster their squad
G2 came back to the Americas and dominated, demonstrating that their success in Shanghai was no accident. They easily navigated through the group stages and playoffs, making it to the grand finals before losing to LEVIATÁN broke their winning streak. They entered Champions Seoul with a lot of enthusiasm. Despite being the top-seeded team in their group, they suffered defeat in the initial round of the playoffs without securing a map, hence they were unable to advance further.
Jawgemo has shown to be a formidable contender to take over the duelist role in G2 Esports’ alleged search for Ice’s replacement. Lesser rumors have also surfaced regarding G2’s interest in well-known players like Demon1 and Derke, who might add more potency to the team in time for the next VCT season. While G2’s squad is changing, it’s still unclear how icy will fare in competitive VALORANT. But his season-long success, especially at Masters Shanghai, indicates that he might soon have another chance to play in the top leagues.
