As the three teams with the highest rankings at IEM Chengdu, FaZe, G2, and MOUZ were predicted to go far in the competition; however, the same cannot be said about Astralis. The Danish team, after all, has already exceeded all expectations in the first tournament that Nicolai “device” Reedtz has ever led in-game.

HLTV’s rating of the top CS2 teams in the world places MOUZ and G2 at number five and sixth respectively, thanks to their regular postseason runs in major competitions. But in the latest CS:GO game, they’re still battling for their first trophy. Since MOUZ has participated in at least one grand final (the CS Asia Championships in November), they are performing better in CS2 than the other team. Conversely, since the release of CS2, G2 has never advanced past the semifinals.

MOUZ had not encountered many difficulties during IEM Chengdu until now. The multinational team dominated the group stage, winning against TYLOO and against FURIA, and easily defeating Team Liquid to advance directly to the semifinals.

G2 didn’t have as much trouble, but in order to go to the next stage, they had to win the lower bracket. They defeated 9z, then suffered a 1-2 loss to Liquid. They bounced back, though, with two decisive wins against HEROIC and Lynn Vision. After defeating HEROIC, G2 advanced to the quarterfinals, where they defeated Virtus.pro.

It’s quite difficult to deny that FaZe is the world’s greatest CS:GO squad. The global superpower won their first 3 competitions in the new game after switching from CS:GO, and they placed second in the next four chances. However, Astralis was in total disarray prior to the commencement of IEM Chengdu. Only once, at the CS Asia Championships in November, did the Danish team advance to the semifinals. More significantly, though, they were unable to secure a spot in the PGL Copenhagen Major in March, thus missing both the first-ever CS2 Major and the first-ever Major held in Denmark.

Not even the most hopeful fan anticipated Astralis to do that well at IEM Chengdu. Under the leadership of device, Astralis won 71% of the rounds in the group stage (winning 65 and losing just 26), and they haven’t dropped a single map in any of their matches. Like G2, FaZe was forced to compete in IEM Chengdu’s lower bracket. They survived the competition with two 2-0 wins over Cloud9 and Flyquest. They defeated Nemiga before falling to Astralis. As usual, Helvijs “broky” Saukants, Robin “ropz” Kool, and David “frozen” Čerňanský form a fragging trio.
