Immortals’ Bolulu gives TSM trouble with unexpected mid lane pick – LCS

While a high percentage of League of Legends professional players normally play by what the “meta” dictates in order to remain at the top of their current regions, others might have 1 or 2 unconventional picks to absolutely throw the enemy’s strategy off.

During Immortals’ week 7 match versus TSM in the 2023 LCS Spring Split, mid-laner Bolulu decided to select one of his pocket picks in Vel’Koz after Zoe was taken away from him previously, aiming to surprise TSM’s squad with a champion that is almost never present in competitive play.

While Immortals ultimately were not able to pick up a win, Bolulu ended the match with the most damage done between both teams and a couple of incredible plays.

Vel’Koz has been a massive and well-trained pick for Bolulu throughout his playing stint in both the TCL and the NACL, however, this Was the first time the champion has been picked in the LCS stage since back in 2020 when Froggen decide to play it and ultimately lost to TSM.

The Eye of the Void is Bolulu’s 3rd most-played champion throughout his competitive career, recording a huge 77 percent win rate in 26 games internationally, according to statistics website Oracle’s Elixir.

TSM had to quickly find a way to adapt to Immortals’ frontline keeping Bolulu’s Vel’Koz out of trouble, which was made even more difficult thanks to the distractions from Viego and Nautilus’ plethora of crowd control keeping the mid lane carry out of possible engagements from TSM. On several occasions, members of TSM were almost one shot almost instantly from a champion they could not get a hold-off. At one point even WildTurtle’s health bar was decimated with a single Vel’Koz ultimate.

Bolulu acted as the biggest focus for TSM for most of the game, but the one player truly suffering constantly was TSM’s top laner Solo, who struggled to act as a full tank due to the high amount of true damage coming in from Vel’koz’s passive per second.

Nevertheless, even if it took a while, in the later stages of the game Solo was able to purchase enough magic resistance to finally tank Vel’koz’s main source of damage. Immortals remained resilient for some plays after, however, TSM started to adapt for their playstyle ultimately winning the game-deciding team fight and crushing the enemy’s Nexus for the win.

For Immortals this might become a clear tip that Bolulu’s Vel’Koz is more than ready for the LCS. With the squad on the edge of not qualifying for the Spring Playoffs, Immortals will need to play perfectly to even have a chance to advance.
