Is the Asian major region going to continue their dominance at LoL MSI 2023?

The 2023 Mid Season Invitational received a couple of changes to its format around the beginning of the year. Said changes impacted the event to become a more inclusive show, with more spots available for teams in Major regions.

Normally, the Mid Season Invitational only accepted the champions of the respective Spring Split from each singular region. After this year’s changes, EMEA, North America, China, and Korea (aka the Major regions) have 2 seats available at the tournament. The minor regions still continue to have a single representative for the time being, technically placing them at a disadvantage.

The competition also features a brand new playing format in 2023. Both the play-in and group stages have been completely changed with the sole focus of providing more matches for fans and viewers to enjoy compared to previous years. Overall, the community believes these changes will create a more exciting version of a rather dull event. The Mid Season Invitation is set to start on May 2nd, hosted in London.

Asia has absolutely dominated the event since its conception, especially China and Korea, with the only Western victory coming at the hands of G2 Esports back in 2019. Thus it is not far-fetched to believe this year’s MSI will feature a battle between the LPL and LCK for the title, especially as they now have 2 representatives coming into the event.

Without further ado let’s take a look at the LPL’s and LCK’s representatives that are coming to dominate the rift once more at the 2023 Mid Season Invitational.

After being 1 series short of attending the 2022 League of Legends World Championship, JDG are back more ready than ever. The Chinese Juggernauts were the first official team to qualify for MSI in the world back on April 9th.

Bilibili Gaming will be attending their first international event in the organization’s history. The light blue squad managed to qualify for the event after completing an upset versus Edward Gaming in the LPL Spring Playoffs. As a whole, they are definitely coming as underdogs when compared to other major region squads.

Gen.G has finally broken its curse in the LCK after an exceptional performance by the end of the Spring Playoffs, defeating KT Rolster and T1 in a matter of 2 days to achieve Korea’s title and first seed at MSI. Chovy and company are favorites to win it all this year, thanks to their champion pool flexibility and overall aggressive playstyle.

T1 is coming at MSI after an incredible 17-1 regular Spring Split that was sadly shadowed by a late loss versus Gen.G in the LCK Finals. Nevertheless, T1 is not considered a second seed by the community, with most mentioning the LCK finals were just a fluke amongst a dominant split.
