This week marks the conclusion of the LEC Winter regular season and the top eight teams will move on to the group stage. Now that Vitality has basically made it through, which of the other seven teams will join them and who will miss out? Let’s find out.
Following the G2 vs Vitality game last week, the French team’s 5 wins allowed them to guarantee their place in the LEC Winter groups. Since they are presently ranked first and will be competing against two weak teams (KOI and XL), they are most certainly going to place in the top two or three teams overall.
However, just behind them, the competition heats up considerably with four teams tied for second place in the rankings at 4-2 records: G2, MAD, the unexpected SK, and BDS. Almost no one would have imagined that MAD would finish in the top half of the standings, even though most people expected G2 and MAD to compete for first place. Given that SK defeated both VIT and G2, and BDS defeated MAD, their presence is not purely coincidental.
Out of all the teams in the LEC, SK appears to have the greatest meta-read. Markoon is demonstrating his abilities as one of the league’s top junglers and his ability to compete against the best: Given that they are the last, XL might be lamenting his departure.
For the remaining three berths in the LEC Winter groups, there is another five-way competition behind the top five. There is a significant chance that Team Heretics, Fnatic, KOI, Astralis, and XL will lose out. Of these five, Team Heretics is in the best condition; they are 3-3 and probably just need one game to make it. For each of these clubs, a score of 4-5 is necessary to guarantee a spot.

Heretics vs Excel
The outcome of this game will probably determine both teams’ standings in the regular split. With a victory, TH would guarantee a spot in the top eight, leaving XL out. Heretics is playing more cohesively recently, and as a result of their results, they are the favorites going into the series.

Vitality vs BDS
The two will square off, demonstrating if BDS has what it takes to contend for the top. There are certain chances for them to defeat Vitality because of excellent draft readings and Adam’s use of his pocket champions to establish top lane domination, particularly if Vitality botches drafts as he did against SK. Despite this, VIT is still expected to win because of their poise and draft preparation versus G2.
-
Fnatic vs Astralis
Both Astralis and Fnatic, who are separated by one victory, are in desperate need of a win if they are to have any chance of moving on to the next round. If Fnatic triumphs, they will then need to defeat MAD or SK. Even though it won’t be simple, they’ll have a better chance if they defeat AST. Both teams will have to hope that AST places second if they triumph over XL.

KOI
Out of all the teams this week, KOI has arguably had the worst week. They will have to compete against G2 and Vitality, hoping to defeat at least one of them. If they succeed, a victory against AST will seal the deal. If not, they will have to wait for a tiebreaker or other favorable circumstances to arise so that they can escape with a possible 3-6 score.
