NRG officially re-enters the LCS, after CLG’s departure

After building a 10 year legacy within not only the League of Legends scene but in the industry as a whole, one of the most historic esports organizations of all time has waived its final goodbyes to the League of Legends competitive scene.

NRG has officially announced that they will be re-entering the LCS after grabbing CLG’ franchise spot, with the North American organization staying for the foreseeable future. CEO Andy Miller stated that NRG will be keeping as much of CLG’s remaining League of Legends foundations as it possibly can, with the main focus being the 2022-23 roster, Academy squads, coaching staff, and analysts.

Miller later confirmed that the Madison Square Garden Corporation will become a major shareholder within NRG Esports, while the Squad will be converting the brand from CLG to NRG as soon as Riot Games legal team approves the motion.

As one of the most experienced and historic organizations within esports, the CLG name will be leaving behind a trail of memorable moments, trophies, and an overall competitive legacy for diehard fans of the League of Legends scene to remember forever.

From their 1st NA LCS title way back in 2015, their incredible run at the 2016 Mid Season Invitational versus tough international opposition, and their recent resurgence in form with a full North American squad, CLG’s League of Legends team has gone through a plethora of highs and lows over a long span of 13 years. Only within the 2023 season, CLG bounced back and became a true contender with less resources than other organizations after spending several seasons stuck dead bottom in the table. However the LCS community knows how much effort it took to turn things around while facing financial hardship and tough results.

After consecutive bottom 2 finishes between 2020 and 2021, CLG decided to introduce a new philosophy based on younger native talent instead of veterans or imports, led by the team’s new boss Greg Kim and a new GM for the League of Legends department, Jonathon McDaniel.

With almost no focus on import signings and a brand new foundation on building from within the league, the squad slowly but surely found consistent success within every season moving forward.

In the end of this unexpected saga, CLG will always be remembered as a pioneer within the esports scene and one of the first organizations to pave the path for the ones to come. And now, NRG will look to continue and even create a new legacy by taking CLG’s spot in the LCS.

Only time will tell if NRG has what it takes to fill the shoes of one of the most beloved organizations of all time.
