NRG VALORANT parts ways with one of their star players
- Changes come after a disappointing season.
- Former world champion MVP is now a free agent.
- Several organizations are already in the lookout to sign Demon1.
NRG has announced the release of North American superstar Max “Demon1” Mazanov, a former VALORANT world champion MVP, transitioning him immediately to free agent status. This move could spark a competitive pursuit for the talented sharpshooter, as he is considered to be one of the best duelists in the scene. What happened to NRG?
This year proved to be a challenging one for both Demon1 and NRG, to say the least. Following a remarkable 2023, where he made a significant impact by joining the Evil Geniuses lineup while playing a pivotal role in leading the underdog team to a world championship, Demon1 managed to escape a difficult contract situation and appeared to be on the verge of success with NRG. Unfortunately, the team struggled in their first VCT split, failing to qualify for the playoffs stage, which led to Demon1 being benched during the same period as the organization sought to revitalize their performance. This strategy did not yield the desired results, as NRG once again fell short of making it to the Americas playoffs, plus did not manage to secure a spot in any international events throughout 2024.

A decision nobody expected
It is fair to say everyone was flabbergasted when news came out stating Demon1 would be placed in the bench, especially as he is known to be a player that handles pressure rather well. Interestingly enough, NRG recently thinks the same, as their social media statement mentions it.
He’s too good to keep on the bench, so we’re giving him the chance to shine elsewhere.

NRG’s performance this year fell significantly short of expectations, and Demon1 did not exhibit the same level of skill he demonstrated with Evil Geniuses back in 2023. Despite this, the decision to release him is still unexpected. NRG made substantial investments to acquire both him and his former EG teammate Ethan, with former coach Chet reportedly using some of his personal funds for their buyouts. Currently, NRG’s VALORANT roster consists solely of Ethan, FNS, and s0m. Situations like this are normal in the world of esports, as super star players are not entirely dependent on their skill, there are external situations that could hinder their performance when compared to previous iterations. This time around NRG did not gel well enough for Demon1 to perform like he did last year.
Regardless of a disappointing season, opportunities to acquire players like Demon1 are extremely rare. Thus we anticipate that he won’t remain available for too long.
