Sentinels secure last playoff spot for VCT Kickoff

Sentinels defeated MIBR 2-0 and lost a tight series to G2 Esports 2-1 to advance to the VCT 2024 Americas Kickoff playoff stage based on map differential. As a result, MIBR and G2 Esports are unable to compete at Masters Madrid and are disqualified from the Kickoff event. The first game of the day pitted MIBR against Sentinels. Sentinels were greatly favored going into this matchup, but MIBR appeared to be changing every day. Sentinels played an incredibly clean Defending side on the first map, Split, winning the first 8 rounds in a row and taking a 10-2 lead at halftime. Zekken, the team’s rookie, performed admirably on Raze, going 14/6/6 in the 1st half. Although the Brazilians leveled the score at 7–7 in the 2nd half, Sentinels had already established a commanding lead. Ascent was the first map MIBR chose, and they quickly gained a 4-1 advantage on the Attacking side. Sentinels, however, demonstrated that their defense on Split was not an anomaly by winning six of the following 7 games to close the half at 7-5. Zekken once more appeared on the attacking side, assisting Sentinels in winning the series by sweeping the map 13–6. Sentinels comfortably accumulated a large round differential with this win, which would determine whether they would advance to the Playoffs over MIBR and G2.

Though G2 lost the series versus MIBR, they still had a chance to qualify. But the cards were stacked very much against them. G2 would have to win against Sentinels 2-0 in order to eliminate Sentinels and MIBR. If they lost one map, their chances of making it to the playoffs were virtually gone. G2 closed the series 2-1, perhaps demonstrating their ability to outmaneuver Sentinels’ attack strategies or simply Sentinels’ indifference as a result of their successful playoff qualification. They won the series, which gave them some optimism going into the regular season, but they won’t be at Masters Madrid or the playoffs.

Zekken had a massive 265.0 rating throughout the entire VALORANT Kickoff tournament, which put him ahead of all other players in average combat score. He also led in average damage and kills per round. In terms of first kills per round, he was also level with Demon1, Keznit, and OXY. Zekken is in the best position to win as long as he keeps improving. He has an experienced IGL in Johnqt, a former world champion in Sacy who is solidly back in his initiator role, and flex specialists TenZ and Zellsis to help him.

At the VCT Americas Kickoff, there are just four teams left: Sentinels, NRG Esports, LOUD, and Evil Geniuses. There are 2 Semi Final matches between the 4 teams. On the other side of the bracket, Sentinels will play NRG, and Evil Geniuses will take on LOUD. On March 3rd, the Playoffs will get underway. The two finalists, or the winners of each Semi Final match, will be directly invited to VCT Masters Madrid. Three Americas Circuit Points will be awarded as a bonus to the overall winner.
