Ssumday might retire from LoL
Many fans were taken aback when Kim “Sumday” Chan-ho announced that he would be taking a break following the end of the previous season. Ssumday left soon after the season to return to Korea, but has spoken and fans are learning about his current circumstances. In an interview with David Jang of Inven Global, the League of Legends veteran shared his thoughts, stating that he felt compelled to take a break from competitive play after leaving 100 Thieves, particularly in light of the fact that so many teams were opting to construct for the future rather than find winning combinations right away. He added that his chances of finding a new home for 2024 were diminished by Riot Games’ decision to switch to an 8-team league.
In the interview, he said:
“I’ve been in the pro scene for more than 10 years, and each year wasn’t easy. It occurred to me once in a while, but recently, I’ve been thinking about after retirement much more. I’ve been playing in this scene because I love gaming, and I haven’t found many other things that I enjoy yet. I’ll need to find something I like.”
Talking about the LCS’ decision to cut the league to 8 teams, he commented:
“The LCS is not in a good situation right now. It has been reduced from 10 teams to 8, and these teams seemed to focus more on building a roster for the future rather than winning now. So, I thought it would be best to take a break. I haven’t decided on my future at the moment. I can stream, or become a coach. I might even find another job after finishing my military service. But for now, I’ll be back in the U.S. and stream for a while, see how things go in the summer, and then make a decision.”

All things considered, Ssumday hasn’t decided with certainty what he wants to do in the future, be it coaching, streaming, or even getting a new job after serving his required time in the South Korean military. But for the time being, he will be streaming and considering his summertime options before deciding on a broad course for his career.
Since making his regional appearance with Team Dignitas in 2017, the 27-year-old phenom has been among the LCS’s most reliable players. Since then, he has appeared in 3 World Championships, won an LCS championship in 2021, and served as the leader of the 100 Thieves League division.
Ssumday will now evaluate his options to make a decision on whether he will look for a new team or maybe stop competing overall and dedicate himself to other careers. He could continue only streaming or look in other avenues to dedicate himself to different fields.
