The best champions teams will pick at the League of Legends 2022 World Championship main stage

The Top Contenders at the 2022 League of Legends World Championship

The 2022 League of Legends World Championship has showcased a total of 47 games already in the playin stage, and the tournament’s meta is close to being stabilized.

Normally, the playing stage gives teams a preview of what champions are going to dominate the international event since Worlds is played on the same patch from the start of the playins all the way to the grand finals of the competition. Champions that are highly picked within the playin stage usually keep up their draft priority on the main stage as well.

With the playin stage now over, here are the most impactful picks all teams looked for in the draft phase.

  • Aatrox

Aatrox has been the most looked for the champion at the World Championship draft phase thus far, with 24 picks and 21 bans. There were just two games out of the total 47 that were played in the playins where Aatrox wasn’t either banned or picked. Before the fourth game of the close series between LOUD and DetonatioN FocusMe, Aatrox had a 100% pick and ban ratio at the event. Now, he sits just below that with a 96%, still the best among all champions in the competition, according to League statistics site Games of Legends.

  • Amumu

Amumu has replaced Nautilus as the best engager support in the game. He’s been involved in 55% of drafts, thanks to his incredible duo lane with Miss Fortune. The mummy has 13 picks and 13 bans so far, heavily blind picked as an aggressive champion to play beside all in junglers or the previously mentioned Miss Fortune due to their extremely powerful ultimate combo.

  • Miss Fortune

After being the most popular champion at the 2021’s playin stage, she’s once again the best blind pick bot laner in the meta. With 17 total picks so far, she’s tied with Kai’Sa for the most picked bot laner in the playins. On a more specific note, the reason why Kai’Sa and Caitlyn are also higher up in the pick rates is due to them being strong picks against Miss Fortune. That is the level of impact the Queen of Bilgewater has in the bot side of the map.

  • Sylas

Right behind Aatrox, Sylas is the second most picked champion at Worlds with a pick and ban rate of 83%. Although he’s been banned just as many times as Aatrox with a total of 21 bans, Sylas has been picked on six fewer drafts. His high presence is due to so many good ultimates from other high priority picks on the meta, such as Hecarim, Maokai, Amumu, and Sejuani. Also, most mid laners are extremely comfortable blind picking the champion, as he is hard to gank due to his mobility and has all-in potential in early skirmishes.

  • Maokai

Lastly, we have a good flex pick in this year’s meta. Maokai’s 22 total picks are the second most among all champions in the event, while his 74% presence rate is the fourth highest, mainly seen within the jungle role. Maokai has become a possible flex between jungle, top, and support as his innate tankiness allows him to be a menace with a low economy. If a team needs hard CC and zoning they will always look at the old bark to help with the situation.
