The future of Nouns in Dota Esports
Without a doubt, Nouns was one of the most surprising teams at The International 2023. Despite placing 3rd in both Tour I and II of the DPC NA 2023 season and then making 2nd place for Tour III, the North American squad still had to qualify through the Regional slots in order to make an appearance at The International this year. On July 15th, Nouns updated their roster by adding Héctor Antonio “K1′‘ Rodríguez Asto who was coming from one of the top two South American teams, Beastcoast. The roster that formed then was able to surprise North American and global fans by not only making it out of the Phase One group stage but also making it as far as Top 8 at the entire event.

Some fans consider it poetic how K1 and Nouns contributed to Beastcoast’s elimination at the event but more importantly how a team that many had dead last in their group was able to beat the likes of TSM in convincing 2-0 fashion at the main event. Even more surprising is the recent news that Nouns won’t be keeping the roster moving forward. The news broke on November 5th after the Nouns Esports twitter account posted a Thank You graphic thanking the players for the season and asking fans to keep an eye out for their 2024 plans.
After further investigation, it was made clear to fans that it wasn’t that Nouns wasn’t interested in these players but instead that the players all decided to go their separate ways. Some fans have gone as far as saying that Gunnar and K1, both of which performed well during TI, have received offers from other teams making the roster hard to keep as it is. Many fans, however, are left wondering why such a good performing team would split up and wondering what really may be happening behind the scenes.

The truth may be much simpler than many think. Despite K1 being such a polarizing player for fans across the globe, there’s certainly a connection between him joining and the team performing much better than before. However, historically speaking, K1 has always been interested in playing in South America, that’s where he made a name for himself and much like other South American players, they usually feel more comfortable at home. WHen K1 joined Nouns it was clear that it was due to there not being a spot for him in South America. After Beastcoast booted him from their roster, the only other viable South American option was Evil Geniuses which had been performing better than Beastcoast internationally and really had no reason to make any roster changes at the moment.
Our sources can say with confidence that K1 is looking to go back to South America and that alone could have started the ripple effect that ended in the team splitting up. Whatever is in the future for Nouns, it’s quite likely they will invest heavily in Dota next year after having a taste of what international success looks like.
