ThunderTalk Gaming completed an incredible upset against Top Esports in the 2023 LPL Spring Split, after an exciting and chaotic series victory 2-1.
This defeat was rather rough for League of Legends Chinese superteam TES, as it meant their 3rd consecutive loss and even made them unable to immediately secure their LPL Spring Split playoffs spot. TES veteran midlaner Rookie cried on his way to the backstage, keeping his head down. As for the other side of the rift, TT midlaner Ucal was also incredibly emotional to have finally surpassed Rookie’s shadow.
Both players have been rivals for what seems like a lifetime. They have gone head to head multiple times at the highest level of League of Legends esports, most notably in the 2018 World quarterfinals. But Ucal had never been able to beat Rookie in a tournament.
TT not only won versus TES, it was absolute domination from start to end. They ended the last game of the series with a 4000 gold advantage, snowballing the match in the mid game throughout clever and patient engagements. Around the 36 minute mark, TES were forced to run into a fight for the Elder Dragon buff which ultimately spelled demise for the Chinese squad.
Soon after the series was done and dusted, Ucal started crying uncontrollably while gathering his technical equipment. He was applauded by his teammates and the live audience, which promptly made him smile while walking to the backstage. Truly an emotional moment for the mid laner.
This series was also the first one to introduce Patch 13.5 in Tier 1 leagues, which saw the return of Aurelion Sol for the 1st time in around 3 years in the LPL, this time piloted by Rookie. Even after its loss, the Aurelion Sol pick showed to be a really strong option for all mid laners in this patch.
TT has managed to rebuild itself going into 2023 with a strong lineup, and this victory will create momentum going into the playoffs. Nevertheless to achieve postseason games, they will have to overcome a tough schedule, as they will most likely need to complete one more upset to qualify for the 2023 LPL Spring Playoffs. They are set to play EDward Gaming on Friday, March 24 at 5am CT, in their last series of the regular season. EDG is currently at the top of the LPL table boasting an 11-2 record.
As for Top Esports, they are still on the edge of securing their playoff spot even after their recent 3 game losing streak. They will battle Bilibili Gaming next Saturday at 5am CT.
