Weibo Eliminates the Last Western Team from Worlds 2023
The League of Legends 2023 World Championship Knockout Stage kicked off yesterday with the quarterfinals match between North America’s 1st seed and China’s 4th seed teams. Unfortunately for the LCS, their top representative was knocked out in an 0-3 series that seemed like it could’ve been much more competitive than it ended up being. North America’s NRG, or as some fans dubbed them, Non Rational Gaming, made through the swiss stage with a 3-1 record, beating their local rivals in Team Liquid and two European teams such as Mad Lions and G2 Esports. In a sense, NRG acted as gatekeepers for other Western teams due to how their matches were drawn out. Their only loss in the swiss stage was to China’s 4th seed team in Weibo Gaming, a roster fielding the likes of TheShy, Xiaohup and Light, so not a weak team in any sense despite being a 4th seed roster.

At the beginning of the series, North American fans were able to revel at the possibilities that NRG could come out with a map 1 victory. The early game was going extraordinarily well as Contractz was able to roam top and keep Dhokla ahead while earning a gold advantage that held all the way till minute 34 of the first map. Throughout this time, NRG was able to get the first blood, two heralds, two dragons and a baron in an exceptional clutch play after defending against a baron play despite not having the number’s advantage.
Despite the great start to the game, Weibo’s ADC Light was able to slowly but surely farm with Aphelios to a point it got out of control. The draft really made it hard for NRG to keep the enemy Aphelios in check since they really didn’t have any reliable engage tools. Dhokla and Contractz on the Renbekton and Viego respectively, weren’t really able to reach Aphelios and cut him down quick enough, and igNar on the Tahm Kench had to keep FBI’s Senna by his side all the time. NRG was pretty much forced to play by picks but Weibvo rarely gave them the chance. By the mid to late 30s, Weibo was a team fight monster having tons of ways to start a fight through K’Sante, Rell or Neeko. A single powerful team fight turned things around and gave Weibo three more dragons, soul and two barons before clanking in the last nail in the coffin.
The 39-minute long map 1 was the most competitive with two next maps being over in under 34 minutes each. TheShy, WeiWei and Light were all absolutely superior to their counterparts in NRG. Light ended the series with a 13.5 KDA dying just 2 times throughout the series. In contrast, the highest KDA among NRG players was 2.0. Yet again, Eastern teams have proven that the gap between the west and east continues to grow. Admittedly, NRG did surprise a lot of fans during their local LCS run and even during the swiss stage at Worlds, but the fact that they made it to Knockouts directly defeating other Western teams attests to the reality that they were the strongest Western team in the event and still weren’t able to beat China’s 4th best team at the event.
