What to expect from the Western Region at the 2023 Mid Season Invitational
The 2023 Mid-Season Invitational received a couple of changes to its format around the beginning of the year. Said changes impacted the event to become a more inclusive show, with more spots available for teams in Major regions.
Normally, the Mid Season Invitational only accepted the champions of the respective Spring Split from each singular region. After this year’s changes, EMEA, North America, China, and Korea (aka the Major regions) have 2 seats available at the tournament. The minor regions still continue to have a single representative for the time being, technically placing them at a disadvantage.

The competition also features a brand new playing format in 2023. Both the play-in and group stages have been completely changed with the sole focus of providing more matches for fans and viewers to enjoy compared to previous years. Overall, the community believes these changes will create a more exciting version of a rather dull event. The Mid Season Invitation is set to start on May 2nd, hosted in London.
The Western region has not really performed well when it comes to international tournaments in the last couple of years, outcasts such as Cloud 9, Rogue (now KOI), and G2 Esports are able to win battles but not the war. This time around, we are going to take a look at this year’s Western representatives, who are looking for revenge against the Asian juggernauts that eliminate them constantly on the international stage. DISCLAIMER: the 2nd seed from the LEC has yet to be decided.
G2 Esports (LEC, EMEA)
At the start of 2023, the LEC received a major overhaul in its format, with the biggest change being the division of their season into 3 splits. The 1st one, Winter Split, finished around February 26th with a confident G2 Esports win versus MAD Lions in the grand finals. Thanks to their new format, the European black and gold juggernauts became the 1st team to book a spot for MSI 2023, while the 2nd organization will be decided via the 2023 LEC Spring Split.
Cloud 9 (LCS first seed)
Cloud 9 secured their ticket for MSI after quickly demolishing FlyQuest in the 2nd round of the LCS Spring Playoffs, 2023 will mark Cloud 9’s second appearance at MSI within the last 3 years. As a staple name in international play, and being completely honest the only North American team to perform well at international events, Cloud 9 will have a lot on their shoulders this time around.
Golden Guardians (LCS second seed)
The miracle story just keeps on giving, as Golden Guardians were able to advance into MSI thanks to an upset win versus FlyQuest back on April 8th. Even after finishing the regular split with a 9-9 record they became playoff beasts, winning 3 consecutive series to attend the first international event in the organization’s history. Teamwork will be the key for GGS and most likely their only option to upset the giants that are flying to London this time around.
