How it all started

Back in May 2022, the owners of Nouns decided to step in the Dota 2 competitive scene. The Nouns operates as a blockchain voting platform, allowing Nouns token holders to suggest and vote on ideas and investments that they believe are valuable. After reaching a consensus, a certain amount of Ethereum tokens from the Nouns Treasury was set aside for this initiative.

As with any esports organization, their main objective is not always to win titles but to make a profit, at the end of the day it is a business. For the Dota 2 roster, the goal of the proposal was to raise awareness of Nouns among esports fans. Considering the huge number of viewers for Dota 2 players, events, and especially the International Championship, many members of the board agreed with the proposal. It allocated 35 ETH, which was around $88,000 in 2022, to recruit an unsponsored North American team known as 4 Zoomers.

Reflecting on the squad’s performance during their time, it seems fair to say that this proposal turned out to be quite successful. Nouns Esports managed to earn half a million USD in prize money, which on paper is pretty good, especially since recent TI events have had much smaller prize pools compared to earlier ones.

The reasoning behind closing up shop

Even though the Dota 2 team seemed like a great idea that boosted Nouns’ reputation in the esports scene and DAO communities, it did have its flaws. Nouns Esports introduced a distinctive approach to how prize money was shared, deciding that the organization wouldn’t take any cut from the players’ earnings. In the end, Nouns Esports is still an esports squad, which is a business model that has often struggled with financial management and staying on the green. Typically, funding for these organizations relies heavily on sponsorships and prize money, along with any initial investments from outside sources like the DAO in this case.

Nouns DAO is struggling, not getting enough returns compared to the expenses they have to do in order to keep going. In their announcement, they mentioned that they are interested in teaming up with sponsors to hopefully come back to Dota 2 Esports down the line.
