FPX is Basically a One-trick Pony

Last week, in one of our esports picks, we talked about how FPX was basically relying on their top laner Summit to carry them, and while they ended up winning over Anyone’s Legend as predicted, it wasn’t as one sided as I thought it would be. We can’t deny just how highly-regarded this player is when it comes to solo-carrying his team, but is it really as simple as he made it look?

Well, certainly it’s not that simple, and ThunderTalk Gaming demonstrated just how hard it can be for Summit to carry the rest of his team if they are not in a winning position. And don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying LWX and Hang are not capable of carrying or anything like that, but ever since Summit joined this team, they seem to be hard-wired to play around the top lane.

For example, if we take a look at their first game against TT, Clid was constantly going for ganks in the top lane because Summit was playing Irelia, which is a strong counter to Gnar. But most of those ganks were in vain as TT was getting a bigger advantage on the other side of the map.

And I’m not talking just about kills, because even though Beichuan was ganking bot lane over and over again, LWX and Hang managed to stay decently well into the game. The problem was that TT started picking up almost every single drake, putting FPX in a very uncomfortable position.

Objectives are one of FPX’s biggest issues. They have extremely poor objective control, averaging only 2 drakes per game and with 45.6% drake control percentage, FPX sit almost at the very bottom of the rankings in this regard. Yes, their early game is good if they manage to give Summit an edge over his counterpart, but if that doesn’t happen, they are in a dire situation.

Can Bin Fully Neutralize Summit?

Chen “Bin” Ze-Bin, top laner for Bilibili Gaming

That is going to be the main question of this match. Let’s get it out of the way, Bin is definitely not having his best split so far, but this is mostly due to him still adapting to his new team. The 2022 MSI champion was one of the biggest threats back in his old team RNG, and I think that he is still the biggest threat in the BLG lineup.

Just like Summit in FPX, Bin has the highest DMG% share of his team. He’s shown a lot of flexibility this split already, playing champions like Kennen, Irelia, and Jax a few times. The thing about Bin is that he has already proven time and time again just how reliable he is, even if he is not playing a carry champion.

I think that Bin is fully capable of neutralizing Summit only if he’s given the resources, but I don’t think that that’s going to be Bilibili’s plan coming into this game. We already talked about how Clid basically camps top, and considering that Summit has the lowest deaths per game, while Bin has one of the highests, I expect BLG to play in a safe manner around the top side.

Fortunately for Bin, the rest of his team is more than capable of putting up a carry performance against the likes of FPX. After all, BLG have been playing quite a lot of late-game compositions with picks like Azir, Viktor, and Jinx. If you are a team that likes to play this style, funneling resources into your top lane is not a great idea.

Bilibili Gaming vs FPX Predictions

What makes this match so interesting to watch is how different these two teams have been playing recently, and also how important this win would be for both. Right now, FPX and BLG are sitting in the middle of the standings, and they only have 4 more matches left to play, which means that they need every win possible if they want to reach the playoffs.

While most of the league of legends betting sites have FPX as the favorites, I think that BLG actually might have the upper hand in this matchup. Sure, FPX have been playing decently as of late, but their weaknesses are starting to show more and more as the split progresses.

I think that Summit is a great top laner, but going up against Bin is not an easy task. I’m pretty sure he knows that the only way FPX can win this match is through their top laner, which is why I think that he is going to show one of his most solid performances and be a complete hassle for FPX while the rest of his team takes over the game.
