Cloud9 Secures Playoffs Spot

After Evil Geniuses’s 2-0 win over Eternal Fire, the Russian squad are now confirmed for the next phase of Pro League. Cloud9 find themselves in the playoffs of Pro League with two games to spare, their imperious 6-0 map record enough to secure qualification after other results in the group went their way. They join the likes of Natus Vincere, Vitality, and FaZe in the playoff bracket, and play their remaining two matches for a spot directly in the quarter-finals. The first half of 2022 was a mixed bag for Vladislav “nafany” Gorshkov and co. Wins in the Funspark ULTI Finals and IEM Dallas were marred by failures to make the playoffs of the PGL Major Antwerp and IEM Cologne, the latter result sending them into the player break on a dour note.

In their first event of the new season Cloud9 have been back to their best, not dropping a single map so far in Malta with the whole squad firing on all cylinders; Timofey “interz” Yakushin, Abay “HObbit” Khasenov and Dmitry “sh1ro” Sokolov have each topped a series apiece.

Two teams are in pole position to join Cloud9 in qualifying from Group D, with FURIA and Liquid both already sitting on two wins each. Evil Geniuses have the best chance of upsetting the apple cart, but would likely need to beat FURIA in order to do so. At this point, Cloud9 is just cruising through the competition and it would be extremely surprising if they end up dropping any of their remaining series.

North American Derby Ends with Liquid Win

Liquid secured their second victory of the ESL Pro League Season 16 group stage with a comfortable 2-0 win over their North American compatriots, Evil Geniuses. Nick “nitr0” Cannella and company dominated all series long, brushing aside their foes 16-7 on Inferno before closing things out with an equally dominant 16-8 showing on Dust2.

Mareks “YEKINDAR” Gaļinskis continues to be a valuable asset for the Liquid squad, with the Latvian import sitting at the top of the scoreboard with 43 kills and a 1.51 rating. Vincent “Brehze” Cayonte had a strong performance on Dust2 despite the overpowering loss, putting up 22 kills whilst also being the only member of his team with an above average rating at 1.05.

The action began on Evil Geniuses’ pick of Inferno, with the two teams exchanging streaks of rounds to start the map four rounds apiece. Liquid were able to pull ahead from this stalemate as the opening half progressed, however, adding six out of the next seven rounds to lock in a 10-5 lead by the switch.

Liquid didn’t let off the gas at the onset of the second half, with nitr0’s men going on a five-round streak thanks to well-executed site hits to surge ahead and reach match-point, 15-5

Next, Evil Geniuses jumped out to an early lead once Dust2 rolled around, going 6-2 to start their CT-side on the back of strong site holds and clinical retakes. Liquid slowly began to turn the map on its head, though, wrestling control of the economy as they picked up six rounds against limited Evil Geniuses resistance to post an 8-7 lead by the half’s end.

Liquid immediately overturned an Evil Geniuses pistol-round victory to get the second half underway, using this momentum to extend their lead to 13-8. Evil Geniuses continued to look disjointed despite a tactical timeout being called in the 22nd round, with a deadly double AWP setup by Liquid repeatedly paying dividends as they soon locked in Dust2 16-8 to go 2-0 in Malta.

While this match might be an exciting one due to the different player vs player matchups we’ll have, there is a clear favorite heading into this match. As mentioned before, Cloud9 is on a roll, not losing a single map through 3 series and they don’t seem to be slowing down any time soon.

On the other hand, Team Liquid couldn’t keep their streak going, dropping their match against FURIA in a disappointing manner, which makes me feel confident that they won’t be able to put up much resistance against Cloud9.
